    Botswana has both a high prevalence of HIV (25% among persons 15-49 years of age) and a high incidence of TB (455 new cases per 100,000 population per year). Drug resistance is a concern with both diseases. High quality surveillance and monitoring data are needed for effective disease control efforts. This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) has two primary objectives. Both are meant to support ongoing efforts of the Botswana Ministry of Health (MOH). The first objective is to strengthen the capacity of the TB laboratory and surveillance systems focusing on drug resistance and system integration. The second objective is to a) complete the national rollout of PIMS II (Patient Information Management System) to health care facilities and development of the national data warehouse and b) to support development and implementation of an HIV surveillance strategy at national- and district-levels.

    Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the leading viral cause of lower respiratory tract infection including bronchiolitis and pneumonia in infants and children worldwide. The annual rate of RSV hospitalizations for children less than 2 years of age in the US is 5.2 per 1,000, but substantially higher among Native Americans. There are currently approximately 40 vaccines or antibody products in development designed to prevent RSV infections. With potential licensure of these products on the horizon, it will be important to establish baseline estimates of the burden of RSV infections in high-risk populations, like Native Americans, and to maintain surveillance post-licensure in order to evaluate impact. Native Americans are also at higher risk for severe respiratory infections associated with human metapneumovirus (HMPV) and other viruses, which will also be monitored through this system.

    The objective of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to support the development of new and innovative on-demand, event -driven and long-acting systemic and non-systemic multipurpose prevention technologies (MPT). It supports development of MPTs that prevent HIV infection and pregnancy (hormonal and non-hormonal methods); sexually transmitted infections (STI) and pregnancy, and (HIV/STI) and non-HIV STI MPTs in cis and trans males and females of all ages. Applications for MPT development may involve pharmacokinetic (PK), pharmacodynamic (PD), safety and, drug-drug interactions (DDI) studies using drug development and formulation science supported by animal model testing. Also supported are biobehavioral and behavioral/social studies to identify MPT user-desired rheological and biophysical factors (look, feel, effectiveness, safety and duration of action) and other behavioral/social factors that could promote increased MPT adoption and use.
