The Executive Office of the President, Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) are accepting applications for Fiscal Year (FY) 2019 Drug-Free Communities (DFC) Support Program grants. By statute, the DFC Support Program has two goals: Establish and strengthen collaboration among communities, public and private non-profit agencies, as well as federal, state, local, and tribal governments to support the efforts of community coalitions working to prevent and reduce substance abuse among youth*. Reduce substance abuse among youth and, over time, reduce substance abuse among adults by addressing the factors in a community that increase the risk of substance abuse and promoting the factors that minimize the risk of substance abuse.

The overall goal of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to identify, in animals, in vivo neurophysiological and behavioral measures for use as assays in the early screening phase of treatment development. The FOA will support efforts to optimize and evaluate measures of neurophysiological and behavioral processes that may serve as surrogate markers of neural processes of clinical interest based on available knowledge of the neurobiology of mental illnesses. The screening assays thus developed from this FOA are expected to build upon systems neurobiology and clinical neuroscience to enhance the scientific value of preclinical animal data contributing to a therapeutic development pipeline by assessing the impact of therapeutic targets and treatment candidates on neurobiological mechanisms of clinical relevance to mental illnesses.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites applications to continue the operations of the NIA Genome Center for Alzheimer's Disease (GCAD) to facilitate and support the Alzheimer's Disease Sequencing Project (ADSP) activities. GCAD will serve as the focal point for all phases of ADSP quality control checking, data harmonization, and meta-analysis. The FOA is intended to support a major component of the full range of analysis for the ADSP. The spectrum of the Center's activities comprises a multidisciplinary attack on Alzheimer's disease (AD) and AD-related dementias (ADRD), in keeping with NIA's programmatic needs. The Center will serve as a national resource for the specific purpose of identifying potential avenues for therapeutic approaches and prevention of the disease.

The goal of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to support research focused on understanding the role of senescence in brain aging and in Alzheimer's disease (AD). This FOA encourages research projects addressing critical knowledge gaps in our understanding of the neurobiology of senescence through cutting-edge techniques, cross-disciplinary collaborations, and/or conceptual innovation, leveraging what is known about senescence in peripheral tissues to learn more about brain aging. Developing a clear understanding of the mechanisms driving aging processes in the brain, including senescence, is essential for combating age-related neurodegenerative diseases.

Lung cancer is responsible for more deaths in Maine than any other cancer, and the state's lung cancer rates are consistently higher than the national average. One in five Maine residents use tobacco, with half identifying as former or current cigarette smokers. With the goal of reducing tobacco use and ultimately reducing the burden of lung cancer in the state, the Maine Cancer Foundation is accepting proposals for projects that seek to reduce the use of tobacco in Maine. Through the program, grants of up to $50,000 a year for up to two years will be awarded in support of new or existing projects. Eligible projects include tobacco cessation for adults; advocacy or policy projects related to tobacco use and/or second-hand smoke; projects that address Maine populations disproportionately impacted by tobacco; and a combination of these. Collaborations between organizations are encouraged.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) uses a R61/R33 Phased Innovation Award mechanism to support clinical research applications that are exploratory and developmental in nature and focus on understanding the neurobiological mechanisms underlying Substance Use Disorders (SUD), including fundamental brain function relevant to substance use.

In addition to providing information about autism to the general public and supporting the needs of individuals with autism and their families, the Autism Science Foundation provides funding directly to scientists conducting cutting-edge autism research on the causes of autism and better treatments for the disorder. To that end, ASF is accepting applications for its Research Accelerator Grants. Through the program, grants of up to $5,000 will be awarded to enhance, expand, and enrich grants currently funded by other sources (including ASF). Grants awarded through the program are not meant to fully support a project but instead are designed to expand the scope, speed the progress, or improve final product dissemination of active autism research grants

Fluctuations in mental status occur commonly in dementia. Such fluctuations vary by dementia type and are most apparent in earlier stages of disease. However, even in late-stage dementia, patients have been reported to exhibit unexpected episodes of mental clarity or lucidity, characterized by spontaneous meaningful and relevant communication at a time when the capacity for coherent speech has presumably been lost.

n support of this mission, NCRG is accepting Letters of Intent for research on gambling disorders. Grants of up to $75,000 a year for two years will be awarded for research with direct implications for gambling policy, though research based on non-policy topics also are welcome. NCRG is looking for proposals of high scientific merit from investigators who demonstrate the ability to disseminate their work at high-impact conferences and in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

The Administration for Children and Families (ACF), Office of Planning, Research, and Evaluation (OPRE) anticipates soliciting applications for Behavioral Interventions Scholars grants to support dissertation research by advanced graduate students who are using approaches grounded in behavioral science or behavioral economics to examine specific research questions of relevance to social services programs and policies. These grants are meant to build capacity in the research field to apply a behavioral science or behavioral economics lens to issues facing poor and vulnerable families in the United States, and to foster mentoring relationships between faculty members and high-quality doctoral students. Applicants will be required to demonstrate the applicability of their research to practice or policy serving low-income children, adults, and families, especially those that seek to improve their well-being. The NIH Research Education Program (R25) supports research education activities in the mission areas of the NIH. The over-arching goal of this NIDA R25 program is to support educational activities that complement and/or enhance the training of a workforce to meet the nations biomedical, behavioral and clinical research needs. This FOA is intended to support research education activities that enhance the knowledge of substance use and substance use disorder research. The program is intended for those in clinically focused careers and/or those training for careers as clinicians/health service providers, clinical researchers, or optimally a combination of the two. This mechanism may not be used to support non-research-related clinical training.

The NIH Research Education Program (R25) supports research education activities in the mission areas of the NIH. The over-arching goal of this National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) R25 program is to support educational activities that encourage individuals from diverse backgrounds, including those from groups underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences, to pursue further studies or careers in substance abuse and addiction research.

The NIH Research Education Program (R25) supports research education activities in the mission areas of the NIH. The goal of this FIC R25 program is to support educational activities that foster a better understanding of biomedical, behavioral and clinical research and its implications, by strengthening research ethics capacity in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) through increasing the number of LMIC research intensive institutions that can provide advanced education in research ethics.

The Methodology, Measurement, and Statistics (MMS) Program is an interdisciplinary program in the Directorate for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences that supports the development of innovative analytical and statistical methods and models for those sciences. MMS seeks proposals that are methodologically innovative, grounded in theory, and have potential utility for multiple fields within the social, behavioral, and economicsciences. As part of its larger portfolio, the MMS Program partners with a consortium of federal statistical agencies to support research proposals that further the production and use of official statistics. NIDA and the following NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs), NIAAA, NICHD, NIMH, NIMHD, NINDS, OBSSR, and NCI intend to publish a limited competition Collaborative Research on Addiction at NIH (CRAN) funding opportunity announcement to solicit applications for a Coordinating Center in service of a nationwide, multisite, multi-modal, longitudinal cohort study to prospectively examine brain and behavioral development from late childhood (approximately age 9-10) through adolescence into early adulthood. Current primary awardees will be eligible to apply and this new award period will be extended to 7 years in duration.

The NIH Directors Pioneer Award supports individual scientists of exceptional creativity who propose highly innovative and potentially transformative research towards the ultimate goal of enhancing human health. Individuals from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Applications in all topics, including, but not limited to, the behavioral, social, biomedical, applied, and formal sciences, relevant to the broad mission of NIH are welcome and may involve basic, translational, or clinical research. To be considered pioneering, the proposed research must reflect substantially different scientific directions from those already being pursued in the investigators research program or elsewhere. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages applications for short-term mentored career enhancement (K18) awards in dental, oral and craniofacial research with a focus on behavioral and social sciences, and genetic and genomic research. The intent of this program is to provide mid-career or senior investigators with short-term training in the theories, tools, methods or approaches of another scientific area, in order to enhance their existing research program. Two categories of candidates are targeted: (a) established dental, oral, and craniofacial research investigators who seek training with investigators from another field, in order to enrich their existing dental, oral and craniofacial research program; and (b) established investigators in other fields who seek training with dental, oral and craniofacial research investigators in order to facilitate the introduction of dental, oral and craniofacial research into an existing research program.

Society's overwhelming reliance on this complex cyberspace, however, has exposed its fragility and vulnerabilities that defy existing cyber-defense measures; corporations, agencies, national infrastructure and individuals continue to suffer cyber-attacks. Achieving a truly secure cyberspace requires addressing both challenging scientific and engineering problems involving many components of a system, and vulnerabilities that stem from human behaviors and choices. Examining the fundamentals of security and privacy as a multidisciplinary subject can lead to fundamentally new ways to design, build and operate cyber systems, protect existing infrastructure, and motivate and educate individuals about cybersecurity. The Secure and Trustworthy Cyberspace (SaTC) program welcomes proposals that address cybersecurity and privacy, and draw on expertise in one or more of these areas: computing, communication and information sciences; engineering; economics; education; mathematics; statistics; and social and behavioral sciences. Proposals that advance the field of cybersecurity and privacy within a single discipline or interdisciplinary efforts that span multiple disciplines are both encouraged.
