This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) encourages applications for institutional research career development (K12) programs that propose to support intensive supervised research training and career development experiences for clinician scientists (Scholars) leading to research independence in the area of substance use and substance use disorder research. This FOA allows appointment of scholars proposing to serve as the lead investigator of an independent clinical trial; or proposing a separate ancillary study to an existing trial; or proposing to gain research experience in a clinical trial led by another investigator, as part of their research and career development. For this FOA, clinician scientists may include (but are not limited to) physicians, clinical psychologists, epidemiologists, doctoral level social workers, pharmacists, and behavioral scientists. Scholars are expected to be supported for 3­5 years on consecutive 12­month appointments. Candidates selected for support as scholars must hold a doctorate and commit a minimum of 9 person­months (equivalent to 75% of full-time professional effort) to conducting clinical research and career development activities associated with the proposed program.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) is accepting applications for fiscal year (FY) 2018 National Center of Excellence for Tobacco-Free Recovery (Short Title: National Center - TFR). The purpose of this program is to establish a national center with specialized subject matter expertise to provide training and technical assistance to states, local governments, tribal communities, behavioral health organizations, primary care providers, clinicians, peers, families, and other stakeholders to help reduce tobacco use among persons with behavioral health disorders, with an emphasis on individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) and co-occurring disorders (COD). The expectation is that the National Center - TFR will build upon and expand SAMHSA' efforts to increase awareness, disseminate current research, educate behavioral health care providers, and create results-oriented collaborations among stakeholder organizations in an effort to reduce tobacco use among individuals with behavioral health disorders.

The Administration for Children and Families (ACF), Office of Planning, Research, and Evaluation (OPRE) is soliciting applications for Behavioral Interventions Scholars grants to support dissertation research by advanced graduate students who are using approaches grounded in behavioral economics to examine specific research questions of relevance to social service programs and policies. These grants are meant to build capacity in the research field to apply a behavioral economics lens to issues facing poor and vulnerable families in the United States, and to foster mentoring relationships between faculty members and high-quality doctoral students. Applicants are required to demonstrate the applicability of their research to practice or policy serving low-income children, adults, and families, especially those that seek to improve their well-being. This FOA calls for research grant applications that address patient adherence to treatment and prevention regimens to promote health outcomes. Applications may address healthcare regimen initiation, implementation, and/or persistence by patients. Descriptive and intervention research may address adherence determinants at one or more levels of ecologic influence, including the patient, caregiver/family, provider and/or healthcare system, and community levels. Attention to scientific rigor in all applications is paramount, with emphasis on appropriate sample sizes, valid outcome measures, and testing intervention mechanisms of action. The NIH Research Education Program (R25) supports research education activities in the mission areas of the NIH. The over-arching goal of this NIDA R25 program is to support educational activities that complement and/or enhance the training of a workforce to meet the nations biomedical, behavioral and clinical research needs in the use of ABCD data. To accomplish the stated over-arching goal, this FOA will support creative educational activities with a primary focus on Courses for Skills Development and Research Experience involving cooperative and competitive use of ABCD datas

The National Ataxia Foundation is committed to funding the best science relevant to hereditary and sporadic types of ataxia in both basic and translational research.

The Domestic Radicalization and Terrorism program strives to better understand the primary drivers of radicalization and what can be done to prevent or intervene during the radicalization process through programmatic efforts. In FY2018, NIJ will emphasize an interest in evaluations of new and existing demonstration programs to prevent terrorism (by way of de-radicalization and disengagement). NIJ will encourage applicants to submit projects which conduct comparative and multi-site programmatic evaluations, help the field better understand risk factors and develop risk assessment tools.

The purpose of this FOA is to fund a single interdisciplinary Coordinating Center to formalize and centralize support of the rural opioid initiative administered by NIDA and co-funded by CDC, SAMHSA, and ARC. This initiative was funded under RFA-DA-17-014 and RFA-DA-17-023 The Coordinating Center will provide scientific, technical, regulatory, ethical, and logistical support of data comparability, new data collection, and data integration; developing integrated rural opioid initiative datasets; assisting grantees with acquisition and analysis of local administrative and/or research datasets that enable evaluation of their implementation activities or augment their community assessments; conducting requested analyses that relate to the integrated rural opioid initiative datasets; developing and executing a rural opioid initiative publication and dissemination plan; and providing logistical support for in-person meetings, conference calls, and webinars that include the rural opioid initiative grantees and funders. The Coordinating Center will be represented on the rural opioid initiative executive steering committee, along with the funders and rural opioid initiative grantees.

The purpose of this solicitation is to support research to produce sustainable community-level reductions in violence. NIJ seeks to develop scientific evidence and build practical knowledge of the factors that contribute to achieving enduring violence reductions in communities. NIJ is interested in receiving proposals for research with both empirical and theory-building elements that will lead to practical and generalizable recommendations. These recommendations should inform community-focused efforts to produce substantial and lasting violence reductions in communities that have suffered from persistently high levels of violence.

With this solicitation, the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) seeks proposal for research and/or evaluation projects to examine the impact of police crime-reduction practices and strategies on four variables. Those are: (1) crime, (2) officer safety, (3) criminal investigations, and (4) criminal prosecutions. NIJ will accept proposals for research examining person- or place-based practices and strategies. NIJ is particularly interested in examining the practice of proactive policing and its related strategies, especially focused deterrence. NIJ will not accept proposals for projects that do not include crime as a variable, nor will NIJ accept proposals that only address crime without consideration of at least one other of the three remaining variables.

CDC plans to fund one organization to raise awareness about the risks of prenatal alcohol exposure and improve understanding about individuals affected by fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs) as well as to promote the prevention of FASDs and care of affected individuals. The work will focus on five major activities: (1) maintaining a national resource directory, (2) developing and disseminating information and resources to various audiences, (3) building capacity for state and local affiliates dedicated to services for FASD prevention as well as identification, care, and support for individuals with FASDs and their families, (4) conducting media outreach and media training, and (5) supporting a speakers bureau for enhanced FASD awareness and prevention efforts. The short-term outcomes to be achieved by the end of the project period focus on increased access to local and state-based resources across the country; increased access to accurate information on FASD prevention as well as identification, support, and care for individuals with FASDs and their families; improved linkages between healthcare champions and local affiliates; and increased awareness of the risks of prenatal alcohol use through use of presenters with lived experience.

BJA seeks applications for the Byrne Criminal Justice Innovation Program. This program furthers the Departments mission by leading efforts to enhance the capacity of local and tribal communities to effectively target and address significant and violent crime issues through collaborative cross-sector approaches that are linked with broader neighborhood development goals. Eligible applicants are limited to states, institutions of higher education (including tribal institutions of higher education), units of local government, nonprofit organizations (including tribal nonprofit organizations), and federally recognized Indian tribal governments (as determined by the Secretary of the Interior) as fiscal agent. The goal of BCJI is to reduce crime, increase trust, and improve community safety as part of a comprehensive strategy to advance neighborhood revitalization. Through a broad cross-sector partnership team, including neighborhood residents, BCJI grantees target neighborhoods with hot spots of violent and serious crime and employ data-driven, cross-sector strategies to accomplish this goal.

With this solicitation, NIJ seeks applications for investigator-initiated research and evaluation projects to improve understanding, prevention and deterrence of firearms violence in general and public mass shooting incidents in particular. This solicitation aims to strengthen the knowledge base and improve public safety by producing findings with practical implications. This solicitation is focused specifically on producing research related to intentional, interpersonal firearms violence.

The awards pursuant to this Notice of Funding Opportunity are contingent upon the availability of funds. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) is soliciting investigator-initiated research that will help expand and advance our understanding about what works to prevent overdose from prescription and illicit opioids by developing and piloting, or rigorously evaluating novel primary or secondary prevention interventions. The intent of this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is to: (1) build the scientific base for the primary or secondary prevention of opioid overdose, and (2) encourage collaboration of scientists from a spectrum of disciplines including public health, epidemiology, law enforcement, social work, economics, and criminal justice to perform research that can identify ways to prevent opioid overdose more effectively. Interventions can be strategies, programs, or policies. Ultimately, this research is intended to improve state and local health departments’ ability to implement and improve interventions focused on preventing opioid-related deaths. Researchers are expected to develop and pilot, or rigorously evaluate novel primary or secondary prevention interventions that address prescription or illicit opioid overdose. Primary prevention approaches are expected to aim to prevent opioid misuse, abuse, and overdose before it occurs. Secondary prevention approaches are expected to focus on the more immediate responses to opioid overdose, such as emergency department services and linkage to treatment immediately following a nonfatal overdose.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Defense Sciences Office (DSO) is issuing a Disruption Opportunity (DO) Special Notice (SN) inviting submissions of innovative basic or applied research concepts in the technical domain of understanding group biases. This DO SN is issued under the Program Announcement for Disruptioneering, DARPA-PA-18-01. All proposals in response to the technical area(s) described herein will be submitted to DARPA-PA-18-01 and if selected, will result in an award of an Other Transaction (OT) for prototype project not to exceed $1,000,000.

This Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) for the Foundational Science Research Unit (FSRU) of the U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences (ARI) solicits new proposals for its fiscal year 2017 program of basic research in behavioral science. It is issued under the provisions of paragraph 6.102(d) (2) and 35.016 of the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR), which provides for the acquisition of basic and applied research and that part of development not related to the development of a specific system or hardware procurement through the competitive selection of proposals.
