The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to inform the scientific community of the pain research interests of the various Institutes and Centers (ICs) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and to stimulate and foster a wide range of basic, clinical, and translational studies on pain as they relate to the missions of these ICs. New advances are needed in every area of pain research, from the micro perspective of molecular sciences to the macro perspective of behavioral and social sciences. Although great strides have been made in some areas, such as the identification of neural pathways of pain, the experience of pain and the challenge of treatment have remained uniquely individual and unsolved. Furthermore, our understanding of how and why individuals transition to a chronic pain state after an acute injury is limited. The mechanisms and processes underlying the contribution of sleep and sleep disturbances to pain perception and the development and maintenance of chronic pain may be very broad. This FOA encourages interdisciplinary research collaborations by experts from multiple fieldsneuroscientists, psychologists, endocrinologists, immunologists, geneticists, pharmacologists, chemists, physicists, behavioral scientists, clinicians, caregivers, and others in relevant fields of inquiry.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to support projects that will elucidate the therapeutic potential of the cannabinoids and endocannabinoid system in the development of mechanism-based therapies for pain.

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) seeks Research Project Grant (R01) applications that propose to use a common conceptual model to develop behavioral interventions to modify health behaviors and improve health outcomes in patients with comorbid chronic diseases and health conditions. Specifically, this FOA will support research in primary care that uses a multi-disease care management approach to behavioral interventions with high potential impact to improve patient-level health outcomes for individuals with three or more chronic health conditions. The proposed approach must modify behaviors using a common approach rather than administering a distinct intervention for each targeted behavior and/or condition. Diseases and health conditions can include, but are not limited to: mental health disorders (e.g., depression), diabetes, smoking, obesity, chronic pain, alcohol and substance abuse and dependence, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, cancer and hypertension.

Research of interest includes but is not limited to Stage I research.

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) invites innovative research to characterize the consequences of psychosocial stress on affective/cognitive functioning and/or pain processing as it relates to opioid use disorder (OUD). This FOA encourages research that elucidates mechanisms of action and determinants of vulnerability and/or resilience by which psychosocial stress influence OUD trajectories. Research using basic or clinical approaches is appropriate.

The purpose of this funding opportunity is to incorporate social outcomes (quality of life, untreated pain, etc.) and cost effectiveness into FDA's existing model and policy analysis tool. Work resulting from this funding opportunity should provide more holistic insight into the opioid crisis and enhance decision makers' ability to propose and consider policy options. Such work will require the integration of new structural components, new data, and new analyses into the model. Given the paucity of data surrounding opioids interventions, this effort will also require studies to collect information about the costs, social outcomes, and other details associated with potential policies.

Applications are encouraged for studies that examine the impact of interventions such as mindfulness meditation, cognitive behavioral therapy, or multi-disciplinary rehabilitation for primary or secondary prevention for opioid use disorder (OUD) or as an adjunct to medication assisted treatment (MAT) of OUD. The Ohio Opioid Abuse, Prevention and Treatment Technology Initiative is to accelerate the development and commercialization of promising new products (or adaptations or modifications) in the categories of medical devices, diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, and health technology.  They should meaningfully address one or more issues associated with the drug crisis driven by use, misuse, abuse and the addictive potential of opioids. Specifically, projects must contribute to near term tangible solutions associated with addiction prevention, treatment and overdose intervention. Technology and products that enable safe and effective treatment of acute and chronic pain without the use of opioids are encouraged.

Prevention Education for Youth Best Practices in Pain Medication Use and Patient Engagement: Community-Level Response to the Opioid Crisis: The Cardinal Health Foundation has engaged content specialists to provide technical assistance to grantees and to create learning communities. We also anticipate convening grantees within the next 12 months for further learning.

Research program focus areas identified by the foundation include: Pediatric Health - Projects that promote health and prevent or treat disease. Of particular interest are applied research projects focused on reducing the incidence of neonatal and early childhood illnesses, or those aimed at improving cognitive, social, and emotional aspects of development. Pediatric Nutrition - Projects that assure adequate nutrition to infants and young children, including applied research that evaluates the provision of specific nutrients and their related outcomes. Environmental Hazards (Nutrient Competitors) - Projects that document the impact of, or ameliorate the effects of, environmental hazards on the growth and development of infants and young children. Major target areas for research include new diagnostic tools that might be more rapid, more specific, more sensitive, or less invasive; treatment regimens that are novel, less stressful or painful, more targeted, have fewer side effects, and/or provide optimal dosing; symptom relief; preventative measures; assessment of deficiencies or excesses (vitamins, minerals, drugs, etc.); and risk assessment tools or measures for environmental hazards, trauma, etc. The foundation is interested in supporting projects that will result in "new" information, treatments, or tools that result in a change in practice; it rarely funds projects that are focused on sharing current information with parents or caregivers.
