The overall goal of the NIH Research Career Development program is to help ensure that a diverse pool of highly trained scientists is available in appropriate scientific disciplines to address the Nation's biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research needs. NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs) support a variety of mentored and non-mentored career development award programs designed to foster the transition of new investigators to research independence and to support established investigators in achieving specific objectives. Candidates should review the different career development (K) award programs to determine the best program to support their goals. More information about Career programs may be found at the NIH Extramural Training Mechanisms website. The objective of the Career Enhancement Award for Experienced Investigators (K18) is to provide support for experienced scientists who either wish to broaden their scientific capabilities or to make changes in their research careers by acquiring new research skills or knowledge. The purpose of this FOA is to provide such investigators with support for an intensive period of mentored research experience to acquire new research capabilities in research areas supported by the sponsoring NIH Institute(s)/Center(s). Such experiences will afford candidate investigators protected time to: 1) enrich and expand their expertise and research programs through retooling in new techniques, emerging technologies, and/or scientific areas; and/or 2) redirect their research programs in new trajectories; and/or 3) catalyze research collaborations in new research directions.  It is expected that this initiative will lead to new and/or augmented research programs competitive for NIH funding.

The purpose of the NIMH Mentored Career Development Award to Build Research Capacity in Global Mental Health is to provide support and "protected time" (three to five years) for an intensive, supervised career development experience that will facilitate the entry of early career investigators into the field of global mental health research and lead to research independence. The NIMH invites applications from advanced postdoctoral and/or recently appointed early research scientists (usually with a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent degree and no more than six years of postdoctoral research experience at the time of application) in biomedical, behavioral, or clinical sciences who are pursuing global mental health research careers in areas supported by the NIMH. After the first year of the award, award recipients must spend at least four months per year in-country conducting research at research sites or institutions in World Bank defined low- or middle-income countries (LMICs).

This award is designed to support young scientists just embarking on their independent research careers.  The applicants' research interests should be consonant with those of the March of Dimes' mission: The  Mission of the March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. The March of Dimes defines a birth defect as any abnormality of structure or function, whether inherited, or acquired in utero and presenting in infancy or early childhood. Deviations from reproductive health of women and men as an underlying basis of birth defects, i.e. preconceptional events, perinatal course, and premature births, are appropriate subjects for research support. Relevance is interpreted broadly to include fundamental cell biology (embryogenesis, cell lineage, differentiation), genetics and genomics, fundamental cellular and clinical pathogenesis of disorders of importance to mothers and infants, biomedical engineering and imaging, and social and behavioral aspects. Each application should be accompanied by a Letter of Support from a Nominator (see below). The award is $150,000 for two years, including 10 percent indirect costs to sponsoring institutions.

The American Psychological Foundation is accepting applications for the 2015 Lizette Peterson Homer Memorial Injury Research Grant. Through the annual program, APF will award one $5,000 grant in support of research on the psychological and behavioral aspects of the prevention of injuries in children and adolescents as reflected in the pediatric psychological interests of the late Lizette Peterson-Homer. To be eligible, applicants must be a student and/or faculty at an accredited university and demonstrate research competence and commitment to the field. In addition, IRB approval must be received from the host institution before funding can be awarded if human participants are involved.

The Autism Science Foundation is inviting applications for its Pre- and Postdoctoral Training Awards and Medical School Gap Year Research Training Awards from graduate students, medical students, and postdoctoral fellows interested in pursuing careers in basic and clinical research relevant to autism spectrum disorders. The proposed training must be scientifically linked to autism and may be broadened to include training in a closely related area of scientific research, including but not limited to human behavior across the lifespan (language, learning, behavior, communication, social function, motor skills and planning, epilepsy, sleep, repetitive disorders); neurobiology (anatomy, development, neuroimaging); pharmacology; neuropathology; genetics; epigenetics; genomics; epigenomics; immunology; molecular and cellular mechanisms; studies employing model organisms and systems; and studies of treatment and service delivery.

To that end, the foundation has issued a Request for Applications for its Bridge to Independence Award program. Grants awarded through the program are intended to invest in the next generation of top autism investigators by identifying talented early-career scientists interested in autism research and facilitating their transition to an independent research career. Grant amounts are fixed at $495,000 over three years.

The American Gastroenterological Association is accepting applications for its AGA-Elsevier Gut Microbiome Pilot Research Award. The objectives of the program are to help early-career investigators establish their research careers and support research projects that represent new directions for established investigators. Projects must focus on the relationship of gut microbiota to digestive health and disease. To that end, a single one-year grant of $25,000 will be awarded to a recipient at any career stage for research on the relationship of gut microbiota to digestive health and disease. To be eligible, applicants must hold an MD, PhD, or equivalent degree (e.g., MBChB, MBBS, DO) and have a full-time faculty position at an accredited institution in North America. AGA membership is required at the time of application. Women and minorities are strongly encouraged to apply.

To that end, the foundation is inviting applications to its annual Bridge to Independence Award Program. Created in 2015, the program promotes talented early-career scientists by facilitating their transition to research independence and providing grant funding at the start of their professorships. Through the program, grants of $495,000 over three years will be awarded to senior postdoctoral fellows who intend to seek a tenure-track faculty position during the upcoming academic year. The award will be activated upon assumption of a tenure-track professorship at a U.S. or Canadian research institution.

The McKnight Endowment Fund for Neuroscience supports innovative research designed to bring science closer to the day when diseases of the brain can be accurately diagnosed, prevented, and treated. To that end, the McKnight Endowment Fund for Neuroscience invites Letters of Intent for its 2018 McKnight Technological Innovations in Neuroscience awards. The program encourages and supports scientists working on the development of novel and creative approaches to the understanding of brain function. McKnight is interested in how a new technology may be used to monitor, manipulate, analyze, or model brain function at any level, from the molecular to the entire organism. Technology may take any form, from biochemical tools to instruments to software and mathematical approaches. Because the program seeks to advance and enlarge the range of technologies available to the neurosciences, research based primarily on existing techniques will not be considered. A goal of the Technological Innovations awards is to foster collaboration between the neurosciences and other disciplines; therefore, collaborative and cross-disciplinary applications are explicitly invited.

The F.J. McGuigan Dissertation Award provides support for dissertation research oriented toward advancing a unified conception of brain and behavior, primarily - but not exclusively - in the psychophysiological area.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) will award Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Institutional Research Training Grants (T32) to eligible, domestic institutions to enhance predoctoral and postdoctoral research training, including short-term research training, and help ensure that a diverse and highly trained workforce is available to meet the needs of the Nations biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research agenda. Research training programs will incorporate didactic, research, and career development components to prepare individuals for careers that will have a significant impact on the health-related research needs of the Nation. 

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) will award Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Short-Term Institutional Research Training Grants (T35) to eligible, domestic institutions to develop and/or enhance research training opportunities for predoctoral students interested in careers in biomedical, behavioral or clinical research. Many NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs) use this NRSA program exclusively to support intensive, short-term research training experiences for health professional students (medical students, dental students, and/or students in other health-professional programs) during the summer. This program is also intended to encourage training of graduate students in the physical or quantitative sciences to pursue research careers by short-term exposure to, and involvement in, the health-related sciences. The training should be of sufficient depth to enable the trainees, upon completion of the program, to have a thorough exposure to the principles underlying the conduct of biomedical research.

This FOA will use the NIH Small Research Grant (R03) award mechanism and seeks to facilitate the entry of beginning investigators into the field of behavioral science research related to drug abuse. To be appropriate for a B/START award, research must be primarily focused on behavioral processes and research questions.

The purpose of the NIH Mentored Research Scientist Development Award (K01) is to provide support and protected time (three to five years) for an intensive, supervised career development experience in the biomedical, behavioral, or clinical sciences leading to research independence. Although all of the participating NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs) use this support mechanism to support career development experiences that lead to research independence, some ICs use the K01 award for individuals who propose to train in a new field or for individuals who have had a hiatus in their research career because of illness or pressing family circumstances. Other ICs offer separate K01 FOAs intended to increase research workforce diversity. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is designed specifically for applicants proposing to serve as the lead investigator of an independent clinical trial, a clinical trial feasibility study, or a separate ancillary clinical trial. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is designed specifically for applicants proposing to serve as the lead investigator of an independent clinical trial, a clinical trial feasibility study, or a separate ancillary clinical trial, as part of their research and career development. Applicants not planning an independent clinical trial, or proposing to gain research experience in a clinical trial led by another investigator, must apply to companion FOA (XXXX).

The NIH Directors Pioneer Award supports individual scientists of exceptional creativity who propose highly innovative and potentially transformative research towards the ultimate goal of enhancing human health. Individuals from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Applications in all topics, including, but not limited to, the behavioral, social, biomedical, applied, and formal sciences, relevant to the broad mission of NIH are welcome and may involve basic, translational, or clinical research. To be considered pioneering, the proposed research must reflect substantially different scientific directions from those already being pursued in the investigators research program or elsewhere. The NIH Directors Pioneer Award is a component of the High-Risk, High-Reward Research program of the NIH Common Fund.

The GWIRP Qualitative Research Award mechanism is being offered for the first time in FY17. Qualitative research is a form of social inquiry that seeks to understand the human experience by exploring how people interpret and make sense of their experiences and the world in which they live. The intent of the FY17 GWIRP Qualitative Research Award is to support qualitative research studies that seek to understand the experiences, perceptions, barriers, and beliefs of Veterans suffering from GWI and those responsible for their care. Observations that drive a research idea may be derived from basic discovery, population-based studies, a clinician's firsthand knowledge of patients, or anecdotal data.

The PRMRP Focused Program Award mechanism is intended to optimize research and accelerate the solution for a critical question related to at least one of the Congressionally directed FY17 PRMRP Topic Areas through a synergistic, multidisciplinary research program. The anticipated total costs budgeted for the entire period of performance for an FY17 PRMRP Focused Program Award will not exceed $10M.

The purpose of this Kirschstein-NRSA predoctoral fellowship (F31) award is to enhance the diversity of the health-related research workforce by supporting the research training of predoctoral students from population groups that have been shown to be underrepresented in the biomedical, behavioral, or clinical research workforce, including underrepresented racial and ethnic groups and those with disabilities. Through this award program, promising predoctoral students will obtain individualized, mentored research training from outstanding faculty sponsors while conducting well-defined research projects in scientific health-related fields relevant to the missions of the participating NIH Institutes and Centers. The proposed mentored research training is expected to clearly enhance the individuals potential to develop into a productive, independent research scientist
