The British Journal of Aesthetics (BJA) holds a competition each year open to students on full-time undergraduate or graduate courses at art and design schools or in fine art/design departments in any country to design a cover for the journal, which is published by Oxford University Press (OUP), both in print and online. The overall cover design includes an image, generally a black & white photograph of a sculpture or a detail from a print. It is normally but not necessarily a monochrome image. But winning entries in the competition have varied considerably from this norm. Entries to the competition will consist in a .jpeg or .tiff containing an image (henceforth, the "image"), and a cover design incorporating the image (henceforth, the "design"), which can be assembled using a template that can be downloaded here (the template is available in InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop). You will also find the covers of recent issues on this page. The resolution of the image must be at least 300dpi. There is no restriction on the use of colour. The winning entry will showcase the distinctive style of the artist, while remaining consistent with the series of covers as a whole.The winner and runners up of last year's competition can be seen on the BJA website here. The specific brief for this year's competition is to design a cover on the theme 'form and function'.

T.R.I.B.E. - a new network of residency spaces in the Balkans and East Europe, dedicated to research and production of Transitory Art, launches its first open call for artistic and research residencies to take place between March 2013 and April 2014. TRIBE network aims to examine vital cultural, political and social questions in a way that will produce fresh perspectives via research and artistic outputs. WHAT IS A TRIBE RESIDENCY? A TRIBE residency is a production or research residency for artists and researchers taking place in Ljubljana, Prague, Istanbul, Nicosia & other locations. TRIBE is a network interested in forming a mobile group of artists and researchers to participate in discussions, interventions and innovations related to the first TRIBE theme: Transition & Utopia (more information on the TRIBE theme can be found below). Works produced will be exhibited in two exhibitions taking place in Istanbul and Ljubljana. Common events for TRIBE group, workshops and a symposium for researchers will take place in Nicosia.

The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad and the U.S. Consulate General in Karachi announces an open competition for a cooperative agreement to establish an Academic Partnership in Music (Composition, Instrumental, and Vocal diploma programs) between a U.S. educational institution and the National Academy of Performing Arts in Karachi, Pakistan in Music.

Arts, Culture & Design in Schools, a charitable initiative of national retailer Target, is accepting applications from schools and nonprofit organizations for programs that bring arts and cultural experiences directly to K-12 students. The company awards grants of $2,000 for programs that enhance the classroom curricula by bringing the arts and cultural experiences to schools via in-school performances, artist-in-residency programs, workshops, and so on. Programs must take place between September 2013 and August 2014. Grants are restricted to K-12 educational institutions and organizations with tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Support to CMA member ensembles and presenters for commissions of new chamber works.   Grants are made for commissioning fees, copying costs and ensemble rehearsal honoraria. Compositions must be written for small ensembles (2 to 10 musicians) performing one to a part, generally without a conductor, and may represent a diverse musical spectrum, including contemporary art music, world music, and works that include electronics.   The new composition must be performed a minimum of three times in the U.S.

The Public Affairs Section (PAS) of the U.S. embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan invites all eligible organizations to submit a proposal for a cooperative agreement with the U.S. embassy to create and design a stand-alone website or dedicated channel on YouTube.com that allows individuals from within Afghanistan and across the globe to upload short (no more than three-minute long) personally recorded videos describing why and how the individual is contributing to the betterment of Afghanistan and/or the ways in which the Afghanistan of today has provided opportunities that didn't exist before, and offering messages of hope for the country's future. In addition to ensuring that others can upload videos to the site, the recipient will also be responsible for recording and uploading an initial set of videos.

The Antarctic Artists and Writers Program furnishes U.S. Antarctic Program operational support, and round-trip economy air tickets between the United States and the Southern Hemisphere, to artists and writers whose work requires them to be in the Antarctic to complete their proposed project. The Program does not provide any funding to participants, including for such items as salaries, materials, completion of the envisioned works, or any other purpose. U.S. Antarctic Program infrastructure consists of three year-round stations and numerous austral-summer research camps in Antarctica, research ships in the Southern Ocean, and surface and air transportation. These assets support the artist and writer projects. The main purpose of the U.S. Antarctic Program is scientific research and education. The Antarctic Artists and Writers Program supports writing and artistic projects specifically designed to increase understanding and appreciation of the Antarctic and of human activities on the southernmost continent. The program does not support short-term projects that are essentially journalistic in nature.

NEH challenge grants are capacity-building grants, intended to help institutions and organizations secure long-term improvements in and support for their humanities programs and resources. Through these awards, many organizations and institutions have been able to increase their humanities capacity and secure the permanent support of an endowment. Grants may be used to establish or enhance endowments or spend-down funds that generate expendable earnings to support and enhance ongoing program activities. Challenge grants may also provide capital directly supporting the procurement of long-lasting objects, such as acquisitions for archives and collections, the purchase of equipment, and the construction or renovation of facilities needed for humanities activities. Funds spent directly must be shown to bring long-term benefits to the institution and to the humanities more broadly. Grantee institutions may also expend up to 10 percent of total grant funds (federal funds plus matching funds) to defray costs of fundraising to meet the NEH challenge. Because of the matching requirement, these NEH grants also strengthen the humanities by encouraging nonfederal sources of support.

Each year the Flaherty offers fellowships to graduate students and emerging and mid-career filmmakers and media professionals. The fellowship program is led by an academic who has attended previous Flaherty Seminars and is designed to further your knowledge of cinema through participation in an array of unique activities. Besides interacting with the group at large, Flaherty fellows take part in private meetings and discussions with the featured artists and other special guests in attendance, including programmers, writers, and academics and participate in a mentorship program. The program is rigorous and rewarding; Fellows arrive on campus a day before the Seminar begins to learn about the history of the Seminar, discuss pre-assigned readings relating to the theme, and watch and discuss each other's films, by way of an informal Fellows' film screening. Fellows will be able to return home with creative inspiration, experiences and connections, which will aid them in furthering their own careers and artistic endeavors.

The Arts in Education Model Development and Dissemination (AEMDD) program supports the enhancement, expansion, documentation, evaluation, and dissemination of innovative, cohesive models that are based on research and have demonstrated that they effectively-- (1) Integrate standards-based arts education into the core elementary and middle school curriculum; (2) strengthen standards-based arts instruction in these grades; and (3) improve students' academic performance, including their skills in creating, performing, and responding to the arts. Projects funded through the AEMDD program are intended to increase the amount of nationally available information on effective models for arts education that integrate the arts with standards-based education programs.

The Fender Music Foundation is currently awarding acoustic guitars, electric guitars, acoustic-electric guitars, bass guitars and the equipment necessary to play these instruments. However, other traditional music instruments are sometimes available. Traditional instruments include string instruments, woodwind instruments, brass instruments, percussion instruments, keyboards and voice. These items are lightly used, blemished or otherwise imperfect and have been collected from manufacturers and retailers. DJ equipment and computers are not available through The Fender Music Foundation. Grant Eligibility Criteria The Fender Music Foundation awards traditional instruments only to music instruction programs that are part of 501c3 organizations or public schools in the United States. To qualify as a music instruction program, participants must be learning how to make music. Participants can be of any age. However, music appreciation or entertainment programs do not qualify, and the participants cannot be professional or career musicians. A qualified program must fit into one of these four categories: In-school music classes, in which the students make music After-school music programs that are not run by the school Community music programs, which offer music instruction to community members Music therapy programs, in which the participants make the music In addition, the program must meet the following five criteria: Individuals are not denied participation based on their musical abilities. If the participants pay to participate, the fee is considerably less than the fair market value. The program has been functioning smoothly for at least one year. Each program participant receives music instruction at least once a week for at least eight months per year. (Camps and workshops are not eligible.) With or without a grant from The Fender Music Foundation, the organization is confident that the program will exist for the foreseeable future.

Nonprofits need striking imagery and video to tell their stories effectively. Beyond that, in order to stand out from the documentary style traditionally associated with the nonprofit sector, they need innovative and creative visionaries at their side to produce campaigns which elevate awareness for their cause. This is why the Getty Images Creative Grants provide two grants of $20,000 USD annually, shared equally between the photographer (or filmmaker) and agency partner to cover costs as they work together to create compelling new imagery for the nonprofit of their choice. The Getty Images Creative Grants are designed to support nonprofits which do not currently have the resources to employ photographers (or filmmakers) and communications professionals but who understand how breakthrough imagery and strategic thinking about communications are essential to further their mission. Grant recipients may use the entire award to offset shoot and other campaign expenses, or donate all or part of the funds directly to their charity and contribute their own time and resources to their campaign. At the completion of the project, the photographer (or filmmaker), the communications agency involved will be showcased, alongside the nonprofit who benefits from their efforts, to the media and to our customers.

The Open Society Foundations invite photographers to submit a body of work for consideration in the Moving Walls 21 group exhibition, scheduled to open in New York in the fall 2013. The Moving Walls exhibition series showcases documentary photography that highlights human rights and social issues that coincide with the Open Society Foundations' mission. Moving Walls is exhibited at our offices in New York and Washington, D.C. For participating photographers, a key benefit of the program is to gain exposure for their projects, as well as the social justice or human rights issues they address. In addition to a $2,500 honorarium, photographers receive their professionally produced exhibitions at the end of the exhibition tour in New York and Washington, D.C.

The Audience Engagement Grant supports photographers to take an existing body of work on a social justice or human rights issue and devise an innovative and effective way of using that work as a tool for social change. We are looking for projects that serve as interventions on pressing problems and provide concrete ways for photographers, organizations, and their target audiences to create a positive impact. We are interested in well-designed projects that: inspire audiences visually and create meaningful interactions with photographic content utilize photography as the basis for programming or tools that move people beyond the act of looking and directly involve them in activities or processes that lead to concrete forms of social change provide deeper, more nuanced understanding of human rights and social justice issues pairs photographers with organizations that are currently working on related issues and connected to the target audience

The Challenge America Fast-Track category offers support primarily to small and mid-sized organizations for projects that extend the reach of the arts to underserved populations -- those whose opportunities to experience the arts are limited by geography, ethnicity, economics, or disability. Age alone (e.g., youth, seniors) does not qualify a group as underserved; at least one of the underserved characteristics noted above also must be present. Grants are available for professional arts programming and for projects that emphasize the potential of the arts in community development. This category encourages and supports the following two outcomes: *Engagement: Engaging the public with diverse and excellent art. *Livability: The strengthening of communities through the arts. You will be asked to select the outcome that is most relevant to your project (you also will be able to select a secondary outcome). When making selections, you should identify the outcome(s) that reflect the results expected to be achieved by your project. If you receive a grant, you also will be asked to provide evidence of those results. Challenge America Fast-Track grants: *Extend the reach of the arts to underserved populations. *Are limited to the specific types of projects outlined below. *Are for a fixed amount of $10,000 and require a minimum $10,000 match. *Receive an expedited application review. Organizations are notified whether they have been recommended for a grant approximately six months after they apply; projects may start shortly thereafter.

The guiding principle of "Art Works" is at the center of everything we do at the NEA. "Art Works" refers to three things: the works of art themselves, the ways art works on audiences, and the fact that art is work for the artists and arts professionals who make up the field. To make "art work," the NEA has included the advancement of innovation as a core component of its mission as a way to ensure the vitality of the arts. We recognize that arts and design organizations are often in the forefront of innovation in their work and strongly encourage innovative projects which are characterized as those that: *Are likely to prove transformative with the potential for meaningful change, whether in the development or enhancement of new or existing art forms, new approaches to the creation or presentation of art, or new ways of engaging the public with art; *Are distinctive, offering fresh insights and new value for their fields and/or the public through unconventional solutions; and *Have the potential to be shared and/or emulated, or are likely to lead to other advances in the field. Through the projects that we support in the Art Works category, we want to achieve the following four outcomes: *Creation: The creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence, *Engagement: Public engagement with diverse and excellent art, *Learning: Lifelong learning in the arts, and *Livability: The strengthening of communities through the arts.
