PA-13-221: The Effects of Modulating Chronic Low Grade Inflammation on Geriatric Condit... - 0 views

  •
The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to invite applications to perform ancillary studies and secondary analyses of data and/or biospecimens from ongoing or completed studies of the effects of inflammation and/or anti-inflammatory agents on geriatric conditions, such as functional decline, mobility disability, fatigue, falls, cognitive decline/dementia, and chronic pain. Data that can inform designs of possible future interventional studies on modulating the effects of chronic inflammation in such conditions are of particular interest. Analyses of both beneficial and harmful effects of modulating chronic inflammation in older individuals are of interest. Other types of studies of interest to NIA include mechanistic studies to explore the pathophysiologic processes by which chronic, low-grade inflammation may accelerate functional decline or other geriatric conditions, and how these pathways may be disrupted by interventions. The secondary analyses and ancillary studies supported by this (FOA) may be based on data and/or biospecimens from either ongoing or completed clinical trials.

Since 1985, the John A. Hartford Foundation authorized nearly $425 million in grants to improve the geriatric skills of current and future health professionals and redesign health care delivery. Foundation grants currently support over 100 programs that span the spectrum of academic and clinical training. These programs increase the nation's capacity and ability to serve older adults by engaging doctors, nurses, and social workers at all the stages of their formation and professional growth. In order to maximize the Foundation's impact on the health and the well-being of the nation's elders, grants are made in two priority areas. Academic Geriatrics and Training The Foundation supports efforts in selected academic medical centers and other health settings to strengthen the geriatric training of America 's physicians, nurses and social workers. Integrating and Improving Services The Foundation supports a limited number of sustainable efforts to improve and integrate the system of services needed by elders and their effectiveness. The Health and Aging Policy Fellows Program is a unique opportunity for professionals in health and aging to receive the experience and skills necessary to make a positive contribution to the development and implementation of health policies that affect older Americans. The year-long program offers fellows the opportunity to participate in a residential track or a non-residential track. The residential track allows fellows to participate in the policymaking process on either the Federal or state level as legislative assistants in Congress, professional staff members in executive branch agencies or policy organizations. The non-residential track allows fellows to remain at their home institution but work on a policy project that involves brief placement(s) throughout the year at relevant sites. Core program components focused on career development and professional enrichment are provided for fellows in both tracks. Fellows also have the opportunity to apply for second-year funding to continue components of their fellowship experience/project either at their placement sites, at the state/local levels, or with non-governmental organizations.
