The goal of this program announcement is to encourage methodological, intervention and dissemination research for understanding and promoting health literacy. Health literacy is defined as the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions (Ratzan and Parker, 2000).

With this solicitation, NIJ seeks applications for funding of research and evaluation related to abuse, neglect, and exploitation of elderly individuals and residents of residential care facilities. Research proposed may be focused at the State, local, tribal, Federal, or juvenile criminal justice policy, and practice levels.

The purpose of this FOA is to seek, identify and support bold and innovative approaches to broaden graduate and postdoctoral training, such that training programs reflect the range of career options that trainees (regardless of funding source) ultimately may pursue and that are required for a robust biomedical, behavioral, social and clinical research enterprise. Collaborations with non-academic partners are encouraged to ensure that experts from a broad spectrum of research and research-related careers contribute to coursework, rotations, internships or other forms of exposure. This program will establish a new paradigm for graduate and postdoctoral training; awardee institutions will work together to define needs and share best practices.

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA), issued by the NIH Basic Behavioral & Social Science Opportunity Network (OppNet), invites applications for short-term mentored career enhancement (K18) awards in basic behavioral and social sciences research (b-BSSR). This funding mechanism will support development of research capability in b-BSSR, with specific emphasis on cross-training and establishing collaborations between researchers with expertise in animal models of basic behavioral and social processes and those studying similar or related processes in human subjects. Basic research using any non-human species or with human subjects in laboratory- or field-based settings is appropriate for this FOA. Eligible candidates for this K18 will be either: (a) scientists conducting b-BSSR in animal models who seek training in the study of similar or related behavioral or social processes in humans; or (b) investigators conducting b-BSSR in human subjects who seek training in the study of similar or related processes in animal models. Candidates may be at any rank or level of research/academic development beyond three years of postdoctoral experience.

The Safeway Foundation, the philanthropic arm of grocery-retailer Safeway, supports nonprofit organizations whose mission is aligned with the company's four priority areas: hunger relief, education, health and human services, and/or assisting people with disabilities. Hunger Relief: In-kind and cash grants are awarded in support of foodbanks and hunger relief organizations. Education: Grants are awarded in support of youth development organizations as well as a broad range of afterschool and physical education programs. Health and Human Services: Grants are awarded to organizations that are engaged in health research and nutritional programs, including medical research and programs that improve the lives of people living with cancer and neuromuscular diseases. Assisting People with Disabilities: Grants are awarded in support of community-based employment and job coaching organizations focused on serving people with disabilities. Grant amounts vary for organizations whose work is national in scope, but a first-time funded organization will typically receive a grant ranging between $10,000 and $25,000.

This FOA is also intended to capitalize on NIAs investment in the development of cross-nationally comparable datasets that can be harnessed to study these research questions; these include the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), the English Longitudinal Study on Ageing (ELSA), the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), and the Human Mortality Data Base. Applications proposing secondary analysis, new data collection, calibration of measures across studies, development of innovative survey measures, and linkages to administrative sources are encouraged. Applications are not restricted to projects using the NIA-supported datasets above and may propose research using any relevant data.

This grant program awards stipends to graduate students to conduct research on ways to improve the disability determination process for SSA's two disability programs - Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI).  The application processes for SSI and SSDI are complex, and members of the public with health problems and economic hardships often find it difficult to navigate this process.  PRI hopes to improve the efficiency and reduce the complexity of disability determination processes by facilitating innovative research through stipends to a broad spectrum of graduate students and by allowing those students to access technical information on SSA disability program operations from disability experts.  In exchange, PRI expects students to produce a thesis or written product by June 30, 2014.

The Enhanced Training and Services to End Violence Against and Abuse of Women Later in Life Program provides or enhances training and services to address elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation, including sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, or stalking, involving victims who are 50 years of age or older.

The Ellison Medical Foundation Senior Scholar program is designed to support established investigators working at institutions in the U.S. to conduct research in the basic biological and basic biomedical sciences relevant to understanding lifespan development processes and age-related diseases and disabilities. The award is intended to provide significant support to allow the development of new, creative research programs by investigators who may not currently be conducting aging research or who wish to develop new research programs in aging. The Foundation particularly seeks to stimulate new research that has rigorous scientific foundations but is currently inadequately funded, either because of its perceived novelty, high risk, or because it is from an area where other "traditional" research interests absorb most funding. The Center for Retirement Research at Boston College works to promote research on retirement issues, transmit new findings to a broad audience, help train new scholars, and expand access to valuable data resources. The center is accepting applications for two funding opportunities: The Steven H. Sandell Grant Program provides funding opportunities for scholars from all academic disciplines and senior scholars working in a new area to pursue cutting-edge projects having to do with retirement income and disability insurance issues. Junior scholars within the first ten years of their academic career and tenured scholars entering a new field are encouraged to submit a proposal. The principal investigator and co-principal investigator, if applicable, are required to have a Ph.D. or comparable professional certification. Scholars must be employed full-time at an academic or research institution. Grants are not intended to fund dissertation research. Up to five grants of $45,000 will be awarded for projects of one year. The Dissertation Fellowship Program in Retirement Income and Disability Insurance Research provides funding opportunities for doctoral candidates to pursue cutting-edge research on retirement issues. Applicants are required to be enrolled in a qualified doctoral program at a United States university; have completed all coursework for a Ph.D. by the time funding starts; and have a dissertation advisor and/or committee. Doctoral candidates from all academic disciplines are encouraged to submit a proposal. Up to seven fellowships of $28,000 will be awarded. Priority research areas for both programs include Social Security and disability insurance, macroeconomic analyses of Social Security, wealth and retirement income, program interactions, international research, and demographic research.
