The ADDF-Harrington Scholar Program is dedicated to advancing academic discoveries into medicines for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. This unique award provides funding and committed project support by a team of pharmaceutical industry experts through a collaboration with the Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation (ADDF) and Harrington Discovery Institute. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites applications for P30 Alzheimer's Disease Research Centers (ADRCs). NIA-designated ADRCs serve as major sources of discovery into the nature of Alzheimers disease and Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (AD/ADRD) and into the development of more effective approaches to prevention, diagnosis, care, and therapy. They contribute significantly to the development of shared resources that support dementia-relevant research, and they collaborate and coordinate their research efforts with other NIH-funded programs and investigators.

The goal of the Pilot Award is to provide early support for exploratory ideas, particularly those with novel hypotheses. Appropriate projects for this mechanism include those considered higher risk but with the potential for transformative results. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites applications for the next 5-year cycle of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) to include a sixth wave of data collection (Wave VI). Add Health is a nationally representative, longitudinal study of individuals primarily born from 1976 through 1982 who were first interviewed as adolescents in grades 7-12 (ages 12-19) in 1994-1995. Add Health respondents are now entering middle age. The goals for Add Health Wave VI are to: Re-interview Add Health cohort members in a combination of web-based and in-person modes, including aggressive non-response follow-up and oversamples of race/ethnic-minority and low-socioeconomic-status individuals. Re-visit cohort members for an in-home health exam that includes venous blood collection. Assay biological specimens for biomarkers of disease. Enrich measures in domains that may elucidate mid- and later-life health and disparities therein (e.g., cumulative stress, discrimination, work-life balance, caregiving). Clean, document, disseminate, archive (including storage of biological specimens for future study), and promote the Wave VI data to the scientific community for aging research.

This program provides funding for health-related research projects that can improve the quality of care and the quality of life for adults who are 65 year or older and who are long term residents living in nursing homes, assisted living, and other congregate care facilities. This program requires researchers to rely on existing datasets to address the research question they seek to answer. Limited collection of new data is allowed in this program if it will enhance the utility of the project outcomes to improve quality in care facilities. Researchers applying for this grant must include a stakeholder in the care delivery or policy arena with whom they will collaborate and who is willing to work with the researcher to develop products such as infographics, tool kits or training materials that are based on the research findings and could be used by those stakeholders to improve quality of care or quality of life for residents in long term care.

The Reducing Injury and Death of Missing Individuals with Dementia and Developmental Disabilities Program supports local jurisdictions’ efforts to reduce the number of deaths and injuries of individuals with forms of dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease or developmental disabilities such as autism who, due to their condition, wander from safe environments. It provides funding to law enforcement and public safety agencies to implement locative technologies to track missing individuals; and to such agencies and partnering nonprofit organizations to develop or operate programs to prevent wandering, increase individuals’ safety, and facilitate rescues.

REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is a parasomnia that presents with abnormal dream mentation, abnormal behaviors, and increased electromyographic tone on polysomnography during REM sleep. Older individuals with RBD frequently develop neurodegenerative diseases, particularly α-synucleinopathies: Parkinson's disease (PD), Lewy Body Dementia (LBD), and Multi-System Atrophy (MSA). Individuals with idiopathic RBD (iRBD) develop an overt synucleinopathy at high rates: 40-50% in 5 years and 80-92% in long-term follow up. iRBD provides a unique opportunity to understand the clinical development and evolution of α-synucleinopathies, as well as a potential path for developing disease prevention therapies. While it is not possible at this time to identify whether a person will develop PD, LBD, or MSA, iRBD is a preclinical/prodromal phase of neurodegenerative, particularly α-synucleinopathy, illness. The current iRBD research community includes investigators and centers across North America and the world. There have been attempts to carry out multi-center iRBD research, but interpretation of findings has been complicated by small numbers of iRBD subjects at individual centers; differences in assessment protocols, including collection methods for cognitive and biomarker data; and variability in diagnostic procedures at different centers. This FOA seeks to develop and support a consortium of investigators who will establish a common iRBD research protocol to collect and share harmonized clinical, cognitive, and biomarker data, establishing a centralized repository of biosamples from individuals with iRBD as they progress from prodromal α-synucleinopathy to PD, LBD, or MSA.

With a rapidly growing aged U.S. population, maintenance of cognitive function has become increasingly critical for the health, welfare, and well-being of the country's citizens. According to a recent survey conducted by the AARP, virtually all adults age 40+ believe maintaining or improving brain health is important; three-quarters of adults age 40+ are concerned about their brain health declining in the future.  Although chronological age itself remains the strongest predictor of age-related cognitive decline and many forms of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease and Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (AD/ADRD), it has become clear that there are protective factors against these outcomes that are poorly understood. These factors have often been described as imparting resilience or resistance to age-related changes in brain structure or neuropathology, building cognitive and/or brain reserve that would oppose such age-related changes or frank pathology, or augmenting other types of cognitive and brain function that would be beneficial. Some of these protective factors might suggest important intervention strategies.

Cooperative agreements under this funding opportunity announcement (FOA), Alzheimer's Disease Program Initiative (ADPI), are dedicated to the development and expansion of dementia-capable home and community-based service (HCBS) systems in States and Communities. There are two application options contained in this FOA, one for States (Option A) and the other for Communities (Option B). No entity would be eligible to apply for both State and Community options. The systems resulting from program activities under both program options will provide quality, person-centered services that help individuals remain independent and safe in their communities.

This solicitation seeks applications for funding for research and evaluation projects that expand understanding of the phenomena of elder abuse, in its many forms, and the effectiveness of strategies to prevent such abuse. NIJ anticipates at least $2 million will be available to fund multiple grant awards, with potential funding from the Office of Victims of Crime (OVC) and the USDOJ Civil Division.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites applications to establish a network to identify, evaluate, track, and conduct research across multiple sites on older adults with superior cognitive performance for their age ("cognitive super agers"). The activity would support aggregation of sufficient numbers of these individuals to advance the fields understanding of factors that promote sustained cognitive health and those that are not of primary importance. Uniform identification and uniform data collection will allow the study of the behavioral, neurological, health, genetic, environmental, and lifestyle profiles that lead to sustained cognitive and brain function in advanced age. Where extant data exists, harmonization protocols would need to be developed in order to make use of all currently available data. Provision of protocols to obtain brain tissue at autopsy would be an important component.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites U24 Cooperative Agreement applications aiming to establish several mis-folded protein polymorphisms resource networks in the area of Alzheimer's disease and Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (AD/ADRD). The central goal of these resource networks is to standardize and distribute seed, oligomers, and fibrils to other investigators in order to clarify and improve the reproducibility of experiments in AD/ADRD. For the past several years, many studies have developed assays and reagents to understand the biophysical properties of various tau and Aß structural variants such as oligomers, protofibrils, and fibrils. As a result, many imaging, chemical, and immunological tools have been developed to detect different types of Aß and tau polymorphs. Establishing standards, understanding the pathological roles of these protein polymorphs, and using newly developed analytic tools to address the direct correlation between patient-to-patient variations in Aß and tau polymorphs are the long-term goals of the resource networks supported by this FOA.

The purpose of NIDILRR's Disability and Rehabilitation Research Projects (DRRP) which are funded through the Disability and Rehabilitation Research Projects and Centers Program, is to plan and conduct research, demonstration projects, training, and related activities, including international activities, to develop methods, procedures, and rehabilitation technology that maximize the full inclusion and integration into society, employment, independent living, family support, and economic and social self-sufficiency of individuals with disabilities, especially individuals with the most severe disabilities, and to improve the effectiveness of services authorized under the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended (Rehabilitation Act). Under this particular DRRP priority, the objective is to improve long-term health outcomes of people with traumatic brain injury (TBI). The grantee will conduct research at the intervention-development stage, to directly inform and shape the development of chronic disease management approaches for meeting the complex and varied health care needs of people with TBI.

This FOA invites applications for a National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center (NACC) whose purpose is to serve NIA and the Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Alzheimer's disease- related dementias (AD/ADRD) field as 1) a national data resource, collecting data from the Alzheimer's Disease Research Centers (ADRCs), affiliated data, and sample repositories; 2) a facilitator of current and future AD/ADRD research; and 3) the central hub for organizing and enabling communication within and outside the ADRC program, including annual meetings and steering committees.
