The Loan Guaranty Service (LGY), which is an office of the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA), Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), is announcing the availability of funds for the Specially Adapted Housing Assistive Technology (SAHAT) Grant Program. The objective of the grant is to encourage the development of new assistive technologies for specially adapted housing. Veterans Affairs acknowledges there are many emerging technologies that could improve home adaptations or otherwise enhance a Veteran's or Servicemember's ability to live independently. Therefore, VA has defined ''new assistive technology'' as an advancement the Secretary determines could aid or enhance the ability of a Veteran or Servicemember to live in an adapted home. PLEASE NOTE: SAHAT funding does not support the construction or modification of residential dwellings for accessibility. This award, presented by the Health Sciences section is given to a member of the Society in recognition of outstanding and sustained contribution to geriatric nursing research. The person selected will present a special lecture at the nursing special interest group meeting during the Annual Meeting of GSA, and will receive a $300 cash prize.

Increased longevity continues to become more prevalent in Native American communities. This trend has placed greater demands on service delivery systems, which are even more complex and fragmented than in non-Indian communities. In recognition of this, under the Older Americans Act (OAA) Amendments of 2006, Congress mandated the support of at least two (2), and not more than four (4), Resource Centers that will focus on issues and concerns affecting individuals who are older Native Americans. The primary goal of these Centers is to enhance knowledge about older Native Americans and thereby to increase and improve the delivery of services to them. The National Resource Centers on Native American Elders (Centers) will concentrate on the development and provision of technical information and expertise and best practices to Indian tribal organizations, Native American communities, educational institutions including Tribal Colleges and Universities, and professionals and paraprofessionals in the field. Each Center must have a national focus and direct its resources to one or more of the areas of primary concern on which the center will focus which shall be; health issues, long-term care, including in-home care; elder abuse; and other problems and issues facing Native communities. Each Center is expected to incorporate the concepts and principles and cultural competencies into all aspects of their staffing, program, and activities. Additionally, each Center's activities will promote one or more of the AoA priority areas. These priority areas are; 1) make it easier for older people to access an integrated array of health and long-term care services, 2) help older people stay active and healthy, 3) support families in their efforts to care for their loved ones at home and in the community, 4) ensure the rights of older people and prevent their abuse, neglect and exploitation, 5) training and technical assistance, and 6) coordination within the university structure. This Notice of Special Interest (NOSI) is intended to promote behavioral and social research on the dementia care workforce and the impact on outcomes for persons living with Alzheimer's disease or Alzheimer's disease-related dementia (AD/ADRD) and their families. Broad areas of interest include (1) how economic and policy factors drive the composition and quality of the dementia care workforce; (2) demographic and familial factors that influence demand for and supply of dementia care workers; (3) training and certification effects on quality and retention of dementia care workers; and (4) the development of data resources required to study these issues.

Center will define the needs and develop strategies that can help seniors, especially women, and their families identify and prevent fraud or elder financial exploitation and enhance the potential for maintaining independence. In partnership with AoA, the Center will design and execute objectives to support the incorporation of the concepts of basic financial and retirement planning into the fabric of Older Americans Act Programs. Center activities will incorporate the latest technology to generate and disseminate knowledge in appropriately packaged forms that can assist women, especially low-income women, women of color, and women with limited English-speaking proficiency to build their capacity to plan for, and to exercise, the most prudent options for their economic security in later life. The Center will serve as a national clearinghouse of tools and information on retirement planning and related financial materials, such as consumer protection and fraud prevention. It will tailor its activities and work products to meet the special needs of disadvantaged women and their families, including limited English-speaking individuals. The award will be made in the form of a cooperative agreement because AoA will be substantially involved in the development and execution of the activities conducted by the Center.

As part of broader university-wide diversity and inclusion efforts, the Office of the President and the Office for the Advancement of Research and Scholarship (OARS) have issued a special call for proposals to conduct research, scholarship, or creative activities in the areas of social justice, human rights, diversity, and inclusion. The Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) Program offers FREE tax help to individuals who are age 60 or older. Section 163 of the Revenue Act of 1978, Public Law No. 95-600, 92 Stat. 2810, November 6, 1978, authorizes this cooperative agreement. The Act authorizes the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to enter into agreements with private or public nonprofit agencies and organizations, which will provide training and technical assistance to volunteers who provide FREE tax counseling and assistance to elderly individuals in the preparation of their federal income tax returns. This Act authorizes an appropriation of special funds, in the form of grants, to provide tax assistance to persons age 60 years of age or older. The IRS receives the funds as a line item in the budget appropriation. The total funds are distributed to the grant recipients for their expenses.

The Brookdale Foundation Group works to advance the fields of geriatrics and gerontology and to improve the lives of senior citizens. The Brookdale National Group Respite Program awards seed grants to service providers that plan to offer new, dementia-specific Group Respite or specialized Early Memory Loss (EML) programming to participants, along with support to caregivers, in order to help individuals remain in their communities. All funded programs must provide a day program for people affected by Alzheimer's disease or other dementia, which is limited to those who are cognitively impaired. Grants of $10,000 will be provided in year one, renewable for $5,000 for the second year, based on evaluation of first year's activities and potential for future continuity of the program. In addition to providing respite care and enjoyable group activities that build on the strengths and abilities of participants, the programs offer family caregivers access to services such as counseling, support groups, information and referral, training, and education. With a nationwide network of programs providing regular respite services, the program demonstrates that a cost-effective social model of adult day services can successfully address the special needs of Alzheimer's families. To that end, grants of up to $15,000 will be awarded to up to fifteen Group Respite and Early Memory Loss programs to develop a new dementia-specific social model program. Grant funds may not be used to support or expand the hours, days, or service capacity of existing social, health, or medical model programs or to serve mixed populations. Applications must be received no later than June 27.

This notice solicits applications for the Rapid Response Rural Data Analysis and Issue Specific Rural Research Studies program. The purposes of this program are to assist rural communities with (1) conducting rapid data analyses, and (2) short term issue-specific rural research studies to help communities and policymakers understand the impact of current and proposed policies and regulations as well as provide information that will improve access to health care and population health in rural America. Due to the nature of rural policy analysis and formulation, rural organizations and health care providers often require timely information that is available only through specialized analysis of databases of information compiled by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), other federal and state agencies, or private organizations. The awardee is responsible for collaborating with HHS agencies to compile and analyze the data that is requested in a timely manner. Participants in the BPN are responsible for conducting all studies that involve disease- or target-specific assays, models, and other research tools and receive funding for all activities to be conducted in their own laboratories. In addition, applicants will collaborate with NIH-funded consultants and can augment their project with NIH contract research organizations (CROs) that specialize in medicinal chemistry, pharmacokinetics, toxicology, formulations development, chemical synthesis including under Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), and Phase I clinical testing. Projects can enter either at the Discovery stage, to optimize promising hit compounds through medicinal chemistry, or at the Development stage, to advance a development candidate through Investigational New Drug (IND)-enabling toxicology studies and phase I clinical testing.
