With this solicitation, NIJ seeks proposals for basic or applied research and development projects. An NIJ forensic science research and development grant supports a discrete, specified, circumscribed project that will: (1) increase the body of knowledge to guide and inform forensic science policy and practice, or (2) lead to the production of useful material(s), device(s), system(s), or method(s) that have the potential for forensic application. The intent of this program is to direct the findings of basic scientific research; research and development in broader scientific fields applicable to forensic science; and ongoing forensic science research toward the development of highly-discriminating, accurate, reliable, cost-effective, and rapid methods for the identification, analysis, and interpretation of physical evidence for criminal justice purposes. Projects should address the challenges and needs of the forensic science community. The operational needs discussed at NIJ's FY 2016 Forensic Science TWG meeting may be found on NIJ.gov. Additional research needs of the forensic science community can be found at the Organization of Scientific Area Committees website. While the goals and deliverables of proposed projects do not necessarily need to result in immediate solutions to the posted challenges or needs, they should speak to them and produce knowledge that adds to work towards eventual resolutions.

The Administration on Aging (AoA), a division of the Administration for Community Living, working with a national network of state, tribal, and local agencies, is committed to ensuring that current and future older adults have the information, tools, and services they need to remain healthy and the support they need to remain independent and active for as long as possible. Recently much has been learned about the individual and societal impact of social isolation and loneliness. Based on current estimates, isolation is a social problem that impacts as many as 17% of older Americans.[i] A large body of literature indicates that social isolation and loneliness have negative impacts on health of older adults and is associated with an increased risk of dying. According to a report by the AARP Public Policy Institute and Stanford University, social isolation among people with Medicare is associated with an estimated $6.7 billion in additional Medicare spending every year.[ii] That's comparable to additional program spending for people with chronic conditions like high blood pressure. Research has linked social isolation and loneliness to higher risks for a variety of physical and mental conditions[iii]. In fact, a Brigham Young University study found that prolonged social isolation is as harmful to health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day, and is more harmful than obesity.[iv]

With this solicitation, NIJ seeks proposals for research and evaluation projects that will: 1. Identify and inform the forensic community of best practices through the evaluation of existing laboratory protocols; and 2. Have a direct and immediate impact on laboratory efficiency and assist in making laboratory policy decisions.

This program provides funding for health-related research projects that can improve the quality of care and the quality of life for adults who are 65 year or older and who are long term residents living in nursing homes, assisted living, and other congregate care facilities. This program requires researchers to rely on existing datasets to address the research question they seek to answer. Limited collection of new data is allowed in this program if it will enhance the utility of the project outcomes to improve quality in care facilities. Researchers applying for this grant must include a stakeholder in the care delivery or policy arena with whom they will collaborate and who is willing to work with the researcher to develop products such as infographics, tool kits or training materials that are based on the research findings and could be used by those stakeholders to improve quality of care or quality of life for residents in long term care.

The objective of this funding opportunity announcement is to build upon work previously done in this area by promoting continued and expanded engagement in national peer-to-peer networks, furthering the design and implementation of small grants demonstration programs at the community level, strengthening and refining evaluation and continuous improvement processes, and expanding dissemination activities. The goal of this 5 year project is to build upon proven models and approaches that can be used by states and communities across the country to involve people with disabilities and older adults in the design and implementation of coordinated transportation systems in ways that successfully make those systems responsive to the needs of these populations. The successful applicant will be expected to build upon the advancements made in this area over the previous 5 years by continuing to establish and expand the partnerships necessary to ensure full inclusion of person with disabilities and older adults in transportation policy and program development, further growing and developing peer-to-peer support networks for the purposes of knowledge sharing and capacity building, further stimulating inclusive transportation planning and service provision through the administration of a small grants demonstration program, and developing in collaboration with ACL a detailed evaluation program. Collect and synthesize information relevant to new and emerging practices experienced in the field.

The Center for Retirement Research at Boston College sponsors the annual Steven H. Sandell Grant Program for scholars in the field of retirement research and policy. The program provides opportunities for junior scholars from all academic disciplines to pursue cutting-edge projects on retirement income issues. Priority areas include Social Security; macroeconomic analyses of Social Security; wealth and retirement income; program interactions; international research; and demographic research

The National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) is seeking applications from qualified organizations for Injury Control Research Center (ICRC) grants. These centers will conduct high quality research and help translate scientific discoveries into practice for the prevention and control of fatal and nonfatal injuries and violence that support NCIPC’s priorities and mission. ICRCs are expected to blend Outreach, Training and Education, and Research activities into a program to reduce the number, risk, and public health impact of injury and violence in the U.S. The over-arching goals for the NCIPC ICRC program are to: Build the scientific base for the prevention and control of fatal and nonfatal injuries and violence. Integrate, in the context of a national program, professionals from a wide spectrum of disciplines of epidemiology, behavioral and social sciences, medicine, biostatistics, public health, health economics, law, criminal justice, and engineering to perform research and provided technical expertise in order to prevent and control injuries and/or violence more effectively. Encourage investigators to propose research that involves intervention development or translation of effective programs among individuals, organizations, or communities. Provide technical assistance to injury and/or violence prevention and control programs in their geographic region, including other researchers; universities; medical institutions; community groups; state and local government agencies, public health agencies; and policy makers. Act as sources of injury and/or violence prevention and control information for their constituents and stakeholders at the local, state, tribal, national, and global levels.

Through LASER, USAID seeks to leverage and support international university networks, inclusive of universities from both the United States (U.S) and lower-middle income countries (LMIC), to improve development research opportunities, evidence generation, and uptake by development actors and policy makers. As part of the Cooperative Agreement, USAID will support a recipient to identify new research questions, fund research activities, translate research results into development impact, and build capacity of local higher education institutions and researchers. USAID seeks to support a recipient with a defined plan to achieve these goals, with the specific details and workplan proposed by the recipient, in consultation with USAID. USAID specifically seeks to support an implementing partner whose workplan includes the creation, engagement, and/or growth of a large, international network of university researchers, centers, and institutes across disciplines that can 1) independently identify and address new and impactful research questions with high relevance to the international development community AND 2) partner with USAID Missions, Bureaus, and Independent Offices (M/B/IOs) to address unique research needs identified by USAID. Additionally, USAID seeks to increase the human and institutional capacity of LMIC HEIs through LASER.

The Retirement Research Foundation funds research projects that have a regional or national impact on older Americans. Of particular interest are projects that: Seek causes and solutions to significant problems facing older adults, ages 65 and older, through support of applied and policy research for which federal funding is not available

This Notice of Special Interest (NOSI) is intended to promote behavioral and social research on the dementia care workforce and the impact on outcomes for persons living with Alzheimer's disease or Alzheimer's disease-related dementia (AD/ADRD) and their families. Broad areas of interest include (1) how economic and policy factors drive the composition and quality of the dementia care workforce; (2) demographic and familial factors that influence demand for and supply of dementia care workers; (3) training and certification effects on quality and retention of dementia care workers; and (4) the development of data resources required to study these issues.

The Social Security Administration's (SSA's) Analyzing Relationships between Disability, Rehabilitation and Work (ARDRAW) Small Grant Program is a one-year $10,000 stipend program awarded to graduate-level students to conduct supervised independent research designed to foster new analysis of work, rehabilitation, and disability issues, which may develop innovative and fresh perspectives on disability. Potential research areas of inquiry include, but are not limited to: Working conditions of SSA beneficiaries Work accommodations and needs of SSA beneficiaries Non-competitive employment for SSA beneficiaries Vocational and other types of service use by SSA beneficiaries Non-SSA assistance provided to SSA beneficiaries

The fellowship program brings visiting scholars in health services research-related disciplines to the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) in Hyattsville, Md. for a period of 13 months to conduct studies of interest to policymakers and the health services research community. Fellows have access to NCHS data resources for use in their proposed studies, and also work on collaborative projects with NCHS staff.
