PEACE IN GEORGIA - Russian war and Georgian democracy - 0 views

  • The war leaves Russian ambitions for regime change in Tbilisi intact. But the Georgian nation and its society have survived a great test to emerge the moral victor, says Georgia's minister of education, Ghia Nodia.By Ghia Nodiawww.opendemocracy.net  Russia says it has started pulling back from Georgian soil, but there are few if any signs that it means business. Therefore, the war is not over yet. Despite this, Neal Ascherson and Ivan Krastev have on openDemocracy already started taking stock of the possible results of the war. I will join them in these attempts - though all of us should understand that while Russia continues trying to change the situation on the ground through military means, any such assessments can only be rather tentative.

  • Could the Soviet economy be re-established in Russia? Written by Dmitri Travin    Saturday, 08 November 2008 19:03 Vladimir Putin remains the most important person in Russia even though he has moved from the post of president to prime minister.  On 29 October he announced that no nationalisation should be expected. Why make such statements 17 years after Russia moved to a market economy?

Swans Commentary: The Alleged Relevance Of Human Rights For The US Economic Crisis: A R... - 0 views

  • The unfolding financial crisis in the U.S., which has sparked real fears that it could lead to a deep and long recession on the global scale, is understandably on the minds of many people. Much has been written about it already; specialists from different backgrounds have attempted to contribute to a better understanding of the history, mechanics, and gravity of the situation. Not all attempts are helpful, however, and some are downright intellectually embarrassing. Such is the case at hand. A team of two professors, Radhika Balakrishnan and Diane Elson, has undertaken in an OpEd (opendemocracy.net, October 16, 2008) to demonstrate that the current economic crisis in the U.S. is a human rights issue. Their principal thesis is the following: "Both the crisis and the proposed bailout involve violations of the human rights of millions of Americans."

Reuters AlertNet - Georgia and citizen war reporting - 0 views

  • Georgia and citizen war reporting 22 Aug 2008 16:13:00 GMT Written by: Andrew Stroehlein Reuters and AlertNet are not responsible for the content of this article or for any external internet sites. The views expressed are the author's alone. Evgeny Morozov has a great piece over at openDemocracy dealing with citizen journalism in the Georgia-Russia conflict. It confirms my opinion of citizen journalism -- which in short tends to be the same as my opinion of citizen dentistry. Some things should be done by professionals. A sample from Morozov’s article, “Citizen war-reporter? The Caucasus test”: [The conflict] was a perfect opportunity for citizen reporters to fill in the gaps [of official claims and counter-claims by belligerent parties]. The fact that they didn’t in the first days of this quick war may reveal that - in war reporting at least - the great promise of citizen journalism is often an empty one. He goes on to say that there has been plenty of blogging about the war, but it was mostly propaganda shouting and hardly much in the way of fact-based reporting. (journalist Goga Aptsiauri’s blog from Gori is an exception)
