The United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission has announced an open house and public comment meeting to be held in Grants this week. On Tuesday the commission will conduct the session to accept comments on the Draft Generic Environmental Impact Statement for In-Situ Leach Uranium Milling Facilities. In-situ is one of the uranium extraction methods being considered for use in the Grants area.

Germany's Asse nuclear storage facility is to get a new operator who will be responsible to the federal environment ministry following revelations this week of serious safety violations at the site. Germany's Federal Office for Radioactive Protection (BfS) is to take over the ailing Asse nuclear storage facility in the state of Lower Saxony after strong criticism of operators Helmholtz's German Research Center for Environmental Health in Munich for failing to alert the government to violations at the site.

Members of the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission were in Grants on Tuesday evening accepting their second phase of comments on their Generic Environmental Impact Statement on in-situ leach milling facilities. In-situ leaching is a process in which local non-potable water groundwater with added oxygen and sodium carbonate or bicarbonate is injected into an underground ore deposit to leach out (or dissolve) uranium, which is then pumped to the surface for additional processing. Currently the process is being used in Texas and Wyoming.

For the 300 or so residents who reside in the sleepy farming/ranching community of the Paradox Valley, everyday concerns in the past have typically included irrigating crops, winter food storage and deciding where to go - Moab or Grand Junction - for major food shopping. Now, in the shadow of a proposal to build a uranium mill in the middle of the valley, there are new concerns for Paradox's future, pitting neighbor against neighbor.

France's Areva (CEPFi.PA: Quote, Profile, Research) submitted a claim to the Finnish government on Monday to search for uranium in northern Finland, the company said. Areva Resources Finland said in a statement the exclusive, 5-year exploration claim was for a 108 sq km (41.7 square miles) parcel of land lying mostly in the municipality of Ranua in Lapland, 750 km north of Helsinki.

However, they have strongly recommended that the areas be cleaned up, the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry said on Wednesday. The stream runs 90km from the western outskirts of Johannesburg before flowing into the Mooi River near Potchefstroom. The department said it and the National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) brought in experts to look at contamination resulting from processing of uranium-bearing gold ore.

The deal will also give the Canadian company the right to acquire a further 10 percent stake in GoviEx for $31 million and the miner could eventually boost its holding to 48 percent, for a further cost of between $145 million and $212 million, depending on timing.

Natural Resources Minister Donald Arseneault is vowing that uncovered uranium drill holes in the Moncton area will be filled soon or the company will face consequences. "If a company does not follow the rules or does it negligently, I will not tolerate that," he said. Arseneault didn't set a firm timeline for ensuring the holes are filled, but said he has the authority to revoke the company's claims if it's not done soon.

Environmentalists and Navajo groups who have been fighting a proposed coal-fired plant on tribal land in northwestern New Mexico have appealed an air permit granted for the plant. The petition filed Thursday alleges the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency failed to complete required analyses of the project, and instead was stampeded into granting the permit because developers of the Desert Rock power plant filed a lawsuit contending the EPA was taking too long.

Soil being used by the Navajo Nation Gaming Enterprise for construction of its Fire Rock Casino parking lot has been analyzed and shown to be free of any uranium radiation contamination. Prospectors want to shovel 300 to 500 scoops of dirt out of the Little Missouri National Grasslands in Slope and Billings counties and examine it for uranium. The same company is talking about building a plant on a railroad siding near Belfield or Bowman to acid treat and burn coal to extract that uranium.

A Canadian company that acquired a reported 550 tonnes of yellowcake uranium from Iraq says that the U.S. military wanted the deal to be kept quiet. SAINT JOHN - The provincial government signaled Friday it is no longer open for uranium business after announcing a series of exploration restrictions, industry firms say. The restrictions, banning uranium exploration in municipalities, watersheds, well fields and within 300 metres of private homes, have triggered concerns for investor confidence, with at least one firm reviewing its future in the province.
