In the 19th century Southern US, it was colloquially identified as a 'shimmy'. Since bathing every day was not normal in the middle ages, the chemise was the undergarment which would take in the body oils or dirt and it was a lot simpler to clean and wear often than the hefty ornate outer clothes.<b
