"Earlier this month my favorite web-based tool for creating screencast videos, ScreenToaster, announced that they are shutting down on July 31. The news that ScreenToaster is shutting down has me taking a look at some other web-based tools for creating screencast videos. Here are three other web-based screencast recording tools that you should consider as a replacement for ScreenToaster. If you're wondering why screencasting is important please read Using Screen Captures to Enhance Instructions."

An amazing site from BBC Earth. The beautifully interactive site is full of images, video, and stories from BBC Earth's most captivating documentaries. Each month features a different theme. The astonishing images and video capture life's most colorful displays in nature. The search page is equally stunning, offering an on-screen widget that lets students adjust the pictures in the grid by filtering by hot/cold, slow/fast, sea/sky, or colour.

This sounds like it will be very cool. Grade 2/3 biodiversity anyone?

My Pop Studio is a creative play experience that strengthens critical thinking skills about television, music, magazines and online media directed at girls. Users select from four behind-the-scenes opportunities to learn more about mass media: In the Magazine Studio, users compose a magazine layout featuring themselves as celebrities. They write an advice column, explore the power of digital retouching, and reflect on the role of body image in today's culture. In the TV Studio, users edit a TV show where the story keeps changing but the images remain the same. They examine their TV viewing choices, comment on teen celebrities, and compare their daily screen time with others. In the Music Studio, users create a pop star and compose her image and song. They explore the power of music in selling a product and search for truth in media gossip. The comment on the values messages in popular music. In the Digital Studio, users test their multi-tasking abilities. They share their experiences with the challenges of digital life online. They consider the "what if's" of social networking sites and reflect on the power of media and technology in their social relationships.

Using the Rhythm Band * To draw music on the screen, click on the pencil, choose an instrument and draw on any of the 6 lines of the percussion score. * To edit your music, click on the "selection" tool (the dashed square) to activate the "edit" mode. On the score, drag a rectangle around the area you want to edit. You may use the tools below the "selection" tool to duplicate, erase and reverse the selected area. * To adjust the tempo of your music, select the turtle or rabbit to make it play slow or fast.

ZooBurst is a digital storytelling tool that is designed to let anyone easily create their own customized 3D pop-up books.
