We're building Storybird in the open, collaborating with artists and enthusiasts to produce fun, simple tools to make short, visual stories. Here are a couple of ways to create a Storybird. We'll be adding more soon.

Adding twitter to blogs

Are you searching for a way to share documents, presentations, slideshows, or a series of photos or images with your students? Then Voice Thread is the free Web 2.0 tool for you and your students (teachers can register for a free education account). Voice Thread allows you and your students to add audio, video, and text as part of conversations concerning science or math content. Comments can be added using a pre-recorded audio file, microphone, call from a phone, or webcam and microphone. A Voice Thread allows group conversations to be collected and shared in one place, from anywhere in the world. This is great when your class is collaborating on a project with students in another time zone or other locations around the world.

There are currently five different ways to search the Mathwire.com site for specific topics or activities. Quick links have been added to the upper left of the Home page and the main Mathwire search pages (A-Z List, Standards, Topics, Archives, What's New?) for your convenience in searching the site.

More and more websites are coming online to give students the ability to unleash their creativity in new and innovative ways. From abstract art to pointillism, students now can click and draw their way into original works of art, and today's freebie gives you a great list of places to begin. The sites are labeled by grade level to help guide you to those that best suit your students. In addition, I've added ratings to give teachers and students an idea of how much interactivity is available at each site. Some allow students to create from beginning to end, while others simply generate the final product with minimal effort. What you will not find here are basic virtual coloring sheets. I tried to find sites that would give students a chance to generate their own original works of art. What could be better?

Now that you and/or your students are using wikis and blogs, are you curious what could be added to them? From animated slideshows to collaborative documents to interactive review games, many great (and free) tools are available. As a follow up to my previous post "What Teachers Should and Should Not Be Posting on their Classroom Webpages", I've pulled a master list of embedding options that will hopefully spark your imagination.

In the past, my students have used Photostory3 to show and talk about their learning as a starting point for their Student Led Conference with their parents. I'm now teaching in a mac school so Photostory3 was not an option. After considering iMovie (and all of it's amazing features) I felt that it had too many features that might be distracting for what I wanted. The ease at which a mac allows you to record your voice, and video using the inbuilt webcam and mic was still going to be the foundation of recording our learning but I still needed to find a suitable platform. A wiki was a consideration and then the brainwave of VoiceThread appeared in my head late one night! The more I considered VoiceThread, the more it's interactive features appealed to me. Using Photostory3 meant a final product. Nothing more added, no room for comment by parents and unless you sent the exported movie file, or embedded it on a wiki, no way for other family members in different parts of the country or in other parts of world, to see it. Using VoiceThread was easy! We've already used it several times this year, so the "tool" and how to use it was already established. Here's the step by step organisation we used to complete a digital protfolio for each student in Room202.

Ads and cyber safety

Make 2D screen based cartoon stories to illustrate conversations and dialogues. Stories can include an unlimited number of frames and are view frame by frame. Each frame can include: * Images: Drag and drop library items onto the frame, or import your own digital photos or images saved from the web. * Text bubbles: Select from a range text bubbles and information boxes. Drag and drop onto the frame and start typing! Text can be in any language and any script. * Voice recordings: Add new voice recordings using the simple built in recording panel. You can also add recordings already saved on your computer. Stories are saved on your computer as HTML page (webpages), and can easily viewed by others on any computer using a web browser such as Internet Explorer. Stories can also be printed. Completed stories can also be loaded back into the Cartoon Story Maker and edited or added to. Very cool

This is a list of books which I hope will be a useful resource for teachers and librarians for the Primary Years Programme of Inquiry of the International Baccalaureate. I have tried to choose books which do not have a narrow focus but which are trans-disciplinary in concept. Please contact me if you would like recommendations for books on specific subject areas, and at a particular age level. The list will gradually be added to and improved as I have time to add to it and as I get more feedback from teachers and librarians. I have divided the list into the six organizing themes (though I realise that there can be considerable overlap between various themes) and have made up separate lists for fiction and non-fiction titles. I have given an indication of reading levels to each of the titles. Titles newly included in this updated list are marked *

The units of inquiry in this publication have been developed by Primary Years Programme (PYP) educators and trialled in IB World Schools. The examples included are intended to support teachers in developing and documenting units of inquiry from their own school's programme of inquiry as well as those outside the programme of inquiry. Some of the units are based on central ideas documented in the PYP sample programme of inquiry included in Developing a transdisciplinary programme of inquiry (2008). Additional units, including subject-specific inquiries, will be added to this publication over time.
