Reflecting the extreme dichotomy of wealth distribution in Mexico, and the tendency for dominant monopolies, Mexican tycoon Carlos Sim is now the richest man in the world. He owns a telecom company that controls the majority of the populations's cell phone plans. It is exceedingly expensive to talk on the phone in Mexico, so many people prefer text messages. His estimated fortune is 53.5 billion.

In Mexico, an indoor football (soccer to us) player was cut in the abdomen during a game and later died from serious internal bleeding. He cut himself when he slid on the wood court in pursuit of a ball and somehow a fragment of wood came unnattached and lodged itself in his stomach. Since a child, his dream has always been anything involving soccer, so his mom said, "Atleast he died doing what he loved."

Indigenous tzotzil women living in Chiapas are asking for a halt of the harrasment from the numerous troops stationed in their state. The government flooded the area with more soldiers than the small state needed, given their size, but they were trying to suppress the Zapatista rebellion in 1994. However, an abundance of troops still linger at checkpoints, presumably to check for drug smugglers (although it is not a primary drug trafficking area). The people there are agitated because the soldiers "do not let (us) walk alone anywhere, especially if it is a group of young women." Walking alone isn't the only issue. More military presence in the area equates to an inrease in sexual assualts on the women, and indeed there have been numerous accounts of tortures, rapes and murders of women in that region (and other regions as well, and of children and men, as well). In a presentation on national women's day, a spokewomen from Las Abejas (a revolutionary group) asked the soldiers to take their guns and leave the land, it is not their place and they bring only destruction.

Jose Antonio Medina, aka 'Don Pepe', was arrested on Friday for his responsibility in bringing thousands of kilos of heroin across the border of Tijuana into California every year. He was the head of a complex operation that smuggled the drug, which was previously produced mainly in Colombia but is growing in production popularity in Mexico. He was part of the La Familia drug cartel, who were estimated to bring 200 kilos into the US every month. Arrests of this nature help to illuminate the drug problem, but to me it seems like it would just aggravate the cartel, who can easily replace him, and is not really solve much of anything.
