College students who frequently text message during class have difficulty staying attentive to classroom lectures and consequently risk having poor learning outcomes, new research shows. Because it is difficult to demonstrate that texting alone can have a direct impact on students' cognitive learning, researchers used path model analysis to describe the relationships between texting, as a "mediator" or intervening variable, and cognitive learning.

This was used in a class I took and I found it a fascinating tool to doing a poll or survey for a class. It allows students to use the tech that they generally already use to a great extent - such as responding by text from the phone using a code specific to that poll, responding via twitter, or on the PollEv.com site directly. I haven't integrated this yet into a class, but I can really see potential here after using it in a class

New tools have been released recently that demonstrate that texting can, in fact, be used for educational purposes.

For those of you who cannot text or don't want to reveal your cell phone numbers this is something I have used in the past that will allow you to text message from a browser.

Students are on top of texting and it's great to communicate with them, but giving out ones cell phone number isn't the best idea. This app solves the problem, text go out, but your number stays hidden.

A powerful reference database that can be used to keep track of sources and also integrated with word processors to generate bibliographies and such. This does a very good job of importing metadata from websites and online texts, and pulling additional information for sources from other databases. It would be nice if this were a bit more customizable, but it may get there in time. The folks developing this are very helpful and responsive to users.

Scribblar is an online whiteboard application. While many disciplines lend themselves well to text, there are certainly classes where the ability to literally draw students a picture is worth a thousand words.

I am moving toward more tech and eventually considering textbook-free classes. Step one is trying a semester with Aplia, a text-linked software program that will allow me to entirely design the course using the online version of the text I selected for my students, complete with a grade book and assignment records for each student. What a great way to be able to asynchronously poll students and still allow them to remain anonymous. This also gives students to see how well their knowledge compares to other students. It also allows them to see if their way of thinking is similar to other students.
