I am a maker! This video shows the Morse Code generator/trainer that I created as an introductory Arduino project. I used the Elego Super Starter Kit which goes for about $30 right now on Amazon. I used three tutorials for the bits and pieces: Green LED; Push Button; 1602 LCD Module. I then wrote C code to write the Arduino sketch that makes it all work together. I am looking forward to making more and more fun electronics video in the future. But what to make next?

I have used this in my classes and love it! The free Poll Everywhere mobile app is perfect for responding to polls, presenting polls, and clicking through PowerPoint presentations. Use it to... 1.) Respond to polls: Audience members can use the app to respond to the presenter's questions live. 2.) Poll an audience: Presenters can ask the audience questions and display poll responses live. 3.) What a great way to be able to asynchronously poll students and still allow them to remain anonymous. This also gives students to see how well their knowledge compares to other students. It also allows them to see if their way of thinking is similar to other students.

This article explains how synchronous communication techniques can effectively work to make graduate courses more relevant. It can also be used for the same purposes in an undergraduate course.

How timely! The NY Times is seeking input from educators on how smartphones have added or detracted from their classrooms in an occasional special report series called "Learning". While it's for high schools, I'm certain that community college faculty could share input.

As much as I appreciated this article for how it addresses the benefits of an avatar with virtual reality learning, I mostly appreciated the real-world support VR could offer-including virtual reality field trips. Discovery Education and Google Expeditions seem to be frontrunners for virtual reality field trips. Even as today's college student experiences a variety of classroom forms (i.e., "brick and mortar", virtual, hybrid), social media's use and influence are evolving depending on context. Widely embraced as a tool for personal or business purposes, the notion that social media could be an effective tool for educational purposes has received recent attention. #TT1711

This is a new favorite tool for gathering feedback from a group. Feedback is gathered as free-text and compiled into a word cloud. Since the survey can be left open for up to 1-2 weeks, this would work well as either a synchronous session tool or an asynchronous tool.
