Having been immersed lately in reading about disruptive technologies, I am in a quandary. Which - if any - technology in higher education is truly disruptive? How would we know? Is there a way to make any technology disruptive? And finally, how might disruptive technology affect higher education's future?

My thoughts about Twitter

A colleague had sent this link to me about Twitter applications for business after I commented on how I was trying to see how some of the technology had practical applications in my classroom. So, I share it with you here.

It seems in the twenty-first century new learning technologies are appearing every day for teachers to think about. With the advent of technology across all fields of learning, the ways in which learners store and retrieve information for further use has dramatically changed.

The Matlab tools are extremely helpful in mathematical modeling and run very well on a home computer. My application was in software engineering at the Master's level. Student license costs are about $200 - $300 or so, depending how many tools are downloaded.

What is Diigo? Diigo stands for "Digest of Internet Information, Groups and Other stuff." It is a social bookmarking program that allows you to save your 'favourites' online, so that they can be accessible from any computer with an internet connection. However, Diigo does much more than this.

Consider going straight to Google itself and see what technology tools appear in their list of apps. Much easier than searching for your own. Since many businesses and organizations also use Google Mail as their internal communication platform, the now mainstream acceptance means the apps are likely fairly robust and worth a try.
