The Pakistani army is an influential organ of the Pakistani government and one that has played a vital role in ensuring national security since the country's independence in 1947. Defense in Pakistan has always been allocated a significant portion of the budget - a sum much higher than that allotted to education and healthcare. Since the lower strata of the Pakistani army largely consists of people who belong to uneducated rural families, the Pakistani army has developed world renowned training programs that not only teach soldiers the art of warfare but basic language, communication, mathematics, science and technical skills. As a result of this rigorous training, Pakistan's infantry is regarded is amongst the best trained in the world. The Pakistan Army came first in the Cambrian Patrol Exercise held in Wales in which 750 soldiers from various countries participated in arguably the most difficult military exercises ever devised.

The government of Pakistan has proposed the option of UN investigation for the cease fire violation along Pak-Indo border as a couple days India protested the killing of its two soldiers by Pakistan military along the heavily militarized border. India claimed that Pakistan was the one who was involved in the cease fire violation and killed two of its soldiers. Out of nowhere, Tahir-ul-Qadri appears to be Pakistan's latest political force-to-be-reckoned with. An Islamic scholar based in Canada, Qadri had made the decision to move out of Pakistan years ago. His sporadic return to Pakistan in December and his entry into local politics has left an-already confused political scenario in the country baffled. The Pakistani Taliban has once again displayed their inhumane and horrendous side, the persuasive atmosphere of fear and grief is prevailing in Pakistan due to the recent incident. The Pakistani Taliban kidnapped 23 Levis soldiers after an attack on the Levis posts by militants in the Frontier Region Peshawar, police said. On December 27, around 30 men well equipped with advanced weapons reached Koi Hassankhel and Jani Kor in two vehicles. The areas are located in the Frontier province of Pakistan which is considered the hub of the Taliban.

KARACHI: India has decided to issue a visa to Pakistani batting legend Javed Miandad. The decision of India's External Affairs Ministry to issue the visa was protested by the Congress and Shiv Sena. Miandad will travel to New Delhi where he will see the last match of the three ODI series against Pakistan and India on January 6. According to the Indian External Affairs Ministry, Miandad was being issued the visa because he was a high ranking official of the Pakistan Cricket Board.

Thursday was the bloodiest day in Pakistan in recent times, and in a country that is being devastated by militants, that is saying something. The capital of the troubled province of Balochistan, Quetta, was hit by three separate bomb blasts, leaving over 100 people dead. While hospitals in the city cope with hundreds of people who were injured in the devastating blasts, funeral prayers for the deceased were carried out today. The attacks have received widespread condemnation from people belonging to all walks of life, including the government, politicians, and civil society at large.

Sami al-Hajj, released from Guantanamo Bay in 2008 after being held there for six years without charge, recently sat down for an interview with Amy Goodman of Democracy Now. He was arrested in Pakistan in 2001 while traveling to Afghanistan on a work assignment, and then transferred to U.S. custody.
