Habib Koité & Bamada Habib comes from a noble line of Khassonké griots, traditional troubadors who provide wit, wisdom and musical entertainment at social gatherings and special events. Habib grew up surrounded by seventeen brothers and sisters, and developed his unique guitar style accompanying his griot mother. He inherited his passion for music from his paternal grandfather who played the kamele n'goni, a traditional four-stringed instrument associated with hunters from the Wassolou region of Mali. "Nobody really taught me to sing or to play the guitar," explains Habib, "I watched my parents, and it washed off on me."

Abdou Kounta, one of my most important and influential djembe teachers, taught at Lisangua ya Bato, a Dance and Drum Camp held annually for over 15 years, in the heart of New York's Catskills.

The ud, or oud, is a bit like a lute, sonically. The musical modes are very different from the lute played by guitarist Julian Bream, of course...but the instrument does resemble the lute somewhat. Yurdal Tokcan is my absolute favorite oud player. He's stunningly great! This 11-minute video's from Yurdal's February 2009 concert.

Göksel Baktagir, Turkish kanun virtuoso, was born in 1966, and lives in Istanbul. He collaborates with my favorite oud (ud) player, Yurdal Tokcan.
