As a member, you can also log onto the site to watch video lessons. This site has been very helpful to me.

  • This is a really fun practice game for upper elementary and middle school! I also love this game for older beginners because it is an easy way to take those easy ta and titi rhythms and really make a more challenging game.

      We used to do a game like this for theatre. I would love to use this as a beginning of the year activity for assessment, or a way to practice certain parts for a concert.
  • This could be done as an ostinato pattern that is repeated, or you could rotate through a set of cards for the students to play.

      I like the idea of using cue cards with simple rhythmic ostinatos to accompany a cd track. You could introduce the ostinatos before the activity and practice by switching between cards. Once the kids feel comfortable, play the song and use the cue cards.
  • Use rhythm flashcards to create a song that the students know well. Have the students clap and read the rhythms and see if they can figure out the mystery song.

    This site is a great resource for orchestra teachers. The purpose of this resource is to provide information about the current state of music programs and opportunities for orchestral students. The content of this site is mainly articles and registration links for different conferences. There are also links to webinars, fellowships, etc. as well as current issues revolving around orchestral music/education. Some sources particularly helpful for teachers are a link with interesting facts about orchestra and articles about how to reach out to bigger audiences. It offers a subscription for "Symphony" Magazine and provdes information about composing, conducting, and performing, all major elements or any music education program.

Musical Content: The Vic Firth Educator page contains fundamental playing technique for snare drum, keyboard percussion and drum set as well as demonstration videos, articles, and sequential playing exercises. There are also videos about instrument set up and maintenance. Other information: The resources on this page are geared toward both educator and student. Many of the music reading articles and exercises are also applicable to non-percussionists and can be readily adapted for classroom use.

This is great for personal use, or to direct students looking for music. Another great use for this sight is for score study.

    IMSLP is a great resource for finding music to study, or doing research about composers, orchestras, compositions, etc. My students have to do a research paper each semester, and this is their primary reference for the assignment. A great, educational tool.

    This website is a tool I often use when I need to find a specific part I am missing from a score set. It has thousands of composers and pieces that are used by music teachers and available in free domain. In addition, this website also offers a score breakdown by composer, nationality, instrumentation, time period, as well as recordings by well known musicians or performing groups from all over the world. Not only are you able to have access to music, but you can access the Naxos Music Library if you have a subscription. Students could also be directed here to look for music to work on their own for solos and chamber groups. This database also includes method books for individual instruments. All downloads are free.

    The online metronome is great when your handheld metronome dies. This metronome can be used in a classroom, during private instructions and at home. The metronome has a range of 40 bpm to 208 bpm with present intervals. Tempo descriptors (Largo through Prestissimo) are provided for the piece that do not provide the exact beats per minute. A4 at 440Hz is also provided.

    This free online metronome proves handy for in-class rehearsals and other applications, in classrooms with students of all ages. User can easily set the tempo using the dial and the steady beat will continue until stopped. It also features tempo markings on the dial for ease of use. I use this at least once a week in my classroom.

    The purpose of this site is to allow music students to practice with a metronome. This site could also be played over a loud system in the classroom, so that an ensemble could play along to the beat and keep a steady tempo. I like how the tempos are labeled with bpm as well as their tempo names.
