Invention of Fireworks Many people associate fireworks with Independence Day, but their original use was in New Year's celebrations. Do you know how fireworks were invented? Legend tells of a Chinese cook who accidentally spilled saltpeter into a cooking fire, producing an interesting flame. Saltpeter, an ingredient in gunpowder, was used as a flavoring salt sometimes.

Gunpowder or black powder is of great historical importance in chemistry. Although it can explode, its principal use is as a propellant. Gunpowder was invented by Chinese alchemists in the 9th century. Originally, it was made by mixing elemental sulfur, charcoal, and saltpeter (potassium nitrate).

China is not the only country in history that has built a wall on its boundary. Athens, Rome, Denmark and Korea also did the same in the past. The Hadrian's Wall in Northern England was also built to separate the Romans from barbarians. All were built for the purpose of defending their country against its invaders.
