I was upset and wondered if there was an alternative. But what difference would private school bring? Mixing solely with middle class peers whose parents all felt they could buy advantage? No thanks.
  • I can whole-heartedly tell you that this would not have been the case had I not been given the opportunity to attend the school I went to. For many a parent who struggles to send their children to fee-paying schools, there is no realistic alternative as the vast majority do live in postcode lottery areas. You are lucky in the sense that you do not, but do not disrespect the hard working, working class parents who make every sacrifice they can to ensure their offspring have a better start in life to try and give them the opportunity to eventually have an overall better quality of life.

  • Outcome-based education (OBE) is one of those that is new, even revolutionary, and is now being promoted as the panacea for America's educational woes. This reform has been driven by educators in response to demands for greater accountability by taxpayers and as a vehicle for breaking with traditional ideas about how we teach our children. If implemented, this approach to curriculum development could change our schools more than any other reform proposal in the last thirty years.
  • According to William Spady, a major advocate of this type of reform, three goals drive this new approach to creating school curricula. First, all students can learn and succeed, but not on the same day or in the same way. Second, each success by a student breeds more success. Third, schools control the conditions of success. In other words, students are seen as totally malleable creatures. If we create the right environment, any student can be prepared for any academic or vocational career. The key is to custom fit the schools to each student's learning style and abilities.

I was born in Mississippi in 1954, the oldest child of Abon and Lucille Bridges. That year the United States handed down its landmark decision ordering the integration of public schools. Not that I knew anything about school at the time. What I knew and loved was growing up on the farm my paternal grandparents sharecropped. It was a very hard life, though. My parents heard there were better opportunities in the city. We moved to New Orleans, where my father found work as a service station attendant, and my mother took night jobs to help support our growing family.

  • instead of importing teachers in Mandarin from China, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin should first tap into the local talent pool. 21% of the primary school students study at SJKC. Among them, 88% are Chinese and 9% are Bumiputra. At the same time, there are around 80,000 students studying at Chinese Independent Schools. All these are the potential candidates for becoming Mandarin teachers in the future.

We do not want to see a repeat of mistakes made by Government in PPSMI as the future of our students is at stake.
