Surprise, surprise... Metaspace is populated with cats.

On the heels of our keynote speaker, whose presentation has been weighing on my mind, this makes me worry that what will cause things to be lost is not things simply not being updated, but also things not being findable-- if some information doesn't have any sort of access point, it may as well not exist.

I would say this is still more of a niche interest than an "antidote," but it does say something that people would still prefer to use the Espresso Book Machine and publish a physical copy of a book and it still sells rather than create it as an eBook on Amazon or Google Books. Probably the most useful aspect is for small independent booksellers to maintain a large accessible inventory but only keep and produce a small physical supply as needed, which could also apply to libraries--however not mention in the the articles is these units also have a hefty price tag of over $100,000.

A fairly brief article that cites the benefits of on-site book publishing (supporting independent and creative authors), formatting and self-publishing academic material, and supporting in a limited manner a patron driven acquisitions model, offset by the machine's high price of $125-$150,000. I think it would be interesting to see numbers on printing volume and overall operating costs, as well as whether any leasing options are available for the book machine.

I'm glad to see the Espresso is starting to get press. It's been around for awhile, and has the potential to be very useful.

With the recent interest in Maker Spaces for libraries it's worth noting that the prices on the printers have dropped into the $2,000, which is much better than the $10-$30,000 a few years ago.

Interesting.  I wonder what an open-source textbook will be like, or what can be done with it.  Also, the article seems to assume that the information in the textbooks is under the same license.

This was another session which showed that with community spaces if you build it they will come. I interviewed at this library in 1996 right after graduate school and it was and still is a large warehouse type building in 70's style. One of the substantial changes to Chattanooga since then is it is known as the "Gig City" for large deployment of gigabit Internet which has brought may Internet developers to the area. The development of the attic into a community space stressed the importance of community outreach and feedback as a sort of ecosystem to keep a project viable.

An interesting article, however it ultimately repeats what writers have been saying for some time, that the book itself is no longer the primary method for delivering information, and what libraries should focus on is specialized collections of information. However this article seems to look at primarily unique collections of rare or historical documents, which would be of little use in a discipline that relies on current information.

The title is misleading, rather than being about a author who can't get people to read her book its about an author who wrote a well received historical/scholarly book but can't get her local library to accept a copy because it's not on the New York Times best seller list.

I don't know if this is a hopeful sign or not, as the only reason this stopped was public outcry, and the need for books is not just for research.

An interesting if short article about the process and challenges a library in digitizing a largely unique collection most on their own.

I posted something about this a couple weeks ago and then found this. Very interesting. We'll see how it plays out, but feels very 1984.

This article was an interesting I didn't agree with a lot of it, but some of it was pretty accurate. Here's a hipster test : "Look around your living space. Do you surround yourself with things you really like or things you like only because they are absurd? Listen to your own speech. Ask yourself: Do I communicate primarily through inside jokes and pop culture references? What percentage of my speech is meaningful? How much hyperbolic language do I use? Do I feign indifference? Look at your clothes. What parts of your wardrobe could be described as costume-like, derivative or reminiscent of some specific style archetype (the secretary, the hobo, the flapper, yourself as a child)? In other words, do your clothes refer to something else or only to themselves? Do you attempt to look intentionally nerdy, awkward or ugly? In other words, is your style an anti-style? The most important question: How would it feel to change yourself quietly, offline, without public display, from within?"

Well, that's an interesting development.

In light of Meebo (NOT Google Reader, ahem) biting the dust, Becky Yoose meditates on having contingency plans. Doing occasional third-party application audits is a good idea.

An interesting re-purposing of a card catalog into a collectoin called "Artists in the Archives: A Collection of Card Catalogs." Card catalogs have been redone so they include artwork that is either contributions from other artists or the public, or visual representations of what the cards originally described.
