How You Use Your Phone May Tip Off Health Problems - 0 views

This was an app I initially gave the benefit of the doubt to, but decided it falls more into gimmick territory. Essentially it tracks a person's movements and phone use, and from there decides if a person is facing health problems. I see too many false positives or deductions that would have to be made--a person could be using their phone less from both not feeling well but also from working out and not having it with them. However the general concept is sound--especially if it becomes connected to a device that monitors and reports a patient's vital signs.

Transfer of Training: Moving Beyond the Barriers | trainingmag.com - 1 views

  • Notwithstanding the complexities of training, it is indisputable that the true success of training is represented in the learner’s ability to demonstrate what has been learned.
  • Overall learner satisfaction is greater if the training is relevant to the job. In alignment with this idea is the importance goal setting (Gist et al. 1990). Relevant goals intensify the learner’s interest in the tasks at hand, which results in persistence from the learner to reach the goal (Gist et al. 1990).
  • new research has shown peer support as being significantly influential on effects of transfer (Burke & Hutchins, 2008). Peer collaboration, networking, and the sharing of ideas relating to the content can act as support for skill transfer in trainees (Hawley and Barnard, 2005)

Adult fiction ebooks outsold hardcovers in 2011: survey - 0 views

  •
This probably isn't the tipping point for ebooks over print--but is very close to it. Ebooks outsold adult hardcover fiction for the first time in 2011, nearly tripling their marketshare to 15%. However, the overall book market declined by 2.5% and the total revenue of ebooks (2 billion) was still much less than that of all print books (11.1 billion).

The-3-Click-Dilemma: are library databases nearing the tipping point of obsolescence? - 0 views

  •
As we get more and more databases/ebooks/whatnot this is an interesting read. Esp. since the person complaining about too many clicks is a historian! Its their job to research and they hate clicking too much-what do our average users think? I had an interesting conversation with a faculty member last week that went something like this: "Brian, I want you to know that it's getting harder for me to get students to use the library- especially the databases- anything beyond three clicks is just too many."
