Missing persons by the numbers - 0 views

  •
Since thousand of missing persons reports are filed by police every year, manually collected and collating those reports into usable data wasn't practical. Instead, Morel said the RCMP developed an algorithm that sweeps the Canadian Police Information Centre, better known as CPIC, for relevant information. Morel says the algorithm scoops up all missing persons reports and related reports filed by police across Canada. That information is then broken down by province and territory and by category. The result is the first publicly available data base on missing persons in Canada that the public and police can use to aid investigations. The data does not yet break down the number of reported missing persons and those people no longer considered missing. Nor does it currently distinguish between missing First Nations women and the rest of the population.
