Treatment for servicemembers suffering from psychological trauma really is a brave new world. Before the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, there was little research on effective treatments and not much pressure to add to what existed, said Army Brig. Gen. (Dr.) Loree Sutton, director of the Defense Center of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury. Sutton, at a Warrior Resilience Conference here, said her office has been working with the services to develop treatment programs and is researching best medical practices. But the effort isn't a simple matter of an open checkbook; results count.

Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program: All branches of the service have some form of the program, according to Lt. Col. Robin Smith Sr., chief well-being officer for the Army Reserve. The Yellow Ribbon program was launched "to prepare soldiers and their families for mobilization, sustain the families during mobilization and to help with reintegration with their families, communities and employers upon redeployment," he said.

WASHINGTON, March 11, 2009 - President Barack Obama's fiscal 2010 budget proposal is necessary to transform the Department of Veterans Affairs into the 21st century organization he envisions, VA's top official said here yesterday. VA Secretary Eric K. Shinseki told the House Armed Services Committee's subcommittee on veterans affairs that the proposed budget is "critical to realizing the president's mission" for future veteran care.

Wilford Hall Medical Center will merge its inpatient services with Brooke Army Medical Center. A new outpatient clinic will replace it.

Representatives from the National Amputee Golf Association this year teamed up with the military to introduce service personnel such as Clark to First Swing, a program designed to involve amputees in golf. First Swing representatives visited Fort Sam Houston recently.

Two important initiatives are underway to help define those service members affected by brain injury. The initiatives are organizations known as the Center for Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine and the National Intrepid Center of Excellence, or "NICoE." These two collaborating programs will play key roles to address traumatic brain injury (TBI).

A bill introduced Wednesday in the Senate proposes to provide equal access in every state to a full-service veterans' hospital.

This center will provide service members, veterans and their families a new resource for psychological health problems and traumatic brain injuries.

The pilot for a new, jointly-developed DoD-VA disability evaluation system (DES), set to expand from five to 22 military bases by May, does much of what proponents hoped it would. It allows more injured or ill service members to win higher disability ratings, to see VA payments start faster and, through greater transparency in the process, to feel they have been treated more fairly by government.
