Thank you Hatice, I will be more open to articles that are telling the stories behind the theories, approaches and even philosophies.
  •
Thanks for sharing Hatice. This is a good one and from our own Faculty of Education. Put that in my reading list.

Bad Examples of Behaviorism - 0 views

  • I once visited a Spanish classroom in a High School where I observed one of the most ineffective uses of a “Token Economy” that I had ever seen. In this case, students were so concerned with getting their “Pesos” that they lost all interest in the topic (which was suppsedly why they were getting them in the first place). The teacher himself spent large portions of class time debating with the students over whether or not they deserved “Pesos”.

A text that I found while searching for something else. It was fun to read it.

This is the biggest problem of universities and It should be solved as soon as possible. what is wrong with these faculty, are students worng with chosing them or are lecturer wrong whilw working for them or other else???

I feel really nervous about new generation who is willing to achieve in scientific fields. I have read that German government save %60 of their total budgets for universities to invest on science. They do not consider engineering as a science field. They basically design their university facilities with scientific equipments and labs for experiments.
  •
To become a teacher is not for those faculties, the thought of at least becoming a teacher (sorry for chicken translation) makes quality of teacher education decrease. Mehmet Şişman, one of the member of YÖK, mentioned in the teacher training and development symposium in Uşak that when they tried to repeal pedagogical formation most of faculty of science argued with the issue, so they have decided to go on the system for a while. There are a lot of students studying those faculties not knowing what to do, still government insists on increasing the capacity of the departments. Without calculating the ratio of employment to the capacity, of couse those people do not want to lose one more chance of getting a job, unfortunately...
  •
I think we have really problem about the role of arts&scince faculty. they are supposed to prepare students to be scientists or instructors but not teachers. however, when we look at capacity of these faculties make us think that Turkey has most crowded scientist population in the world! I think for arts&science faculty we need increase in quality but decrease in numbers of capacity.
  •
The mission and vision of the arts and science faculties should be presented clearly to high school students or to people who are about to make a decision about a department. Unfortunately, being a university graduate is perceived like a rare feature so most of the high school graduates try to enter a university avoiding the profession and department. Also, the students who hold a BS degree of a department of arts and science faculty should have given more opportunities, like scholarships or job opportunities, so that they will be able to continue their graduate education in a arts and science faculty.

I wonder if there is any empirical study on students' learning in this school?
  •
Actually when you mentioned it, I began wondering too, I will check until monday and share if I can find a related study :)
  •
Thanks Canan. Looking forward to read some research on these schools.
  •
I have found a book that is about the Sudbury school experience and its effects. the book is not available online unfortunately, only some pages of it: http://books.google.com.tr/books/about/Legacy_of_Trust.html?id=VYMoow2eSI4C&redir_esc=y

Derse Zorro maskesiyle giren öğretmen! - Eğitim - Radikal - 2 views

Bilge, thank you for the post. That was nice to read. However, I wonder if there were no ideas about how to make classrooms have fun or what is "student centered" instruction. The article says, "Öğretmenler önce birbirleriyle iletişim kurmayı, köşe kapmacadan afiş hazırlamaya kadar pek çok etkinlikle öğrenmenin aşamalarını, çocukların özelliklerini, dersi öğrenci merkezli anlatmayı öğreniyor." I want to say "they remind" not "they learn" since I don't think that the teacher does not know what student centered instruction is, or how to colourize lectures. Let's say I hope.

Humanism for Schools - 1 views

  •
A useful website including examples of learning and teaching materials about humanism.
  •
Gamze, thanks for sharing. Especially I liked the "humanist perspectives" part since a teacher might not have difficulty in implementing a pre-planned curriculum, however, s/he might have hardship while creating a humanistic classroom. Because, in education, what is a humanistic element is and what is not is not so clear as traditional views. Remember what Ana said, "It seems some of you think that humanism means freeing yourselves or the educational environment. Humanism means enabling students to set a goal and work together to achieve that goal." Ana tries to say that we should not let learning occurs just by chance. That is not humanism. Humanistic teacher just should allow students what they want to do and teach them considering their way of learning and interests. That's why I found humanist perspectives part really useful. To illustrate, to touch on environmental issues in the classroom, you can read the related part for grasping the idea of how a humanistic teacher should behave while teaching this issue.

The link to the pool that has been prepared for technology based educational materials for FATİH project. In this pool, teachers and students can send several educational materials that they created or they were using in classroom environment. They aim to extend the content with contributions of people who are actively in education in Turkey. However, it is obvious that the project needs professional e-content materials. Videos, pdf's are ok but multimedia based tools are needed.

Erdem thank you for sharing this website, I haven't heard about this before. While I was teaching to elementary level children I used fenokulu.net a lot as a turkish source. Now I think I can also make use of this one in the future. I also liked the fact that the website contains the pdf formats of "Bilim ve Çocuk". Very rich website indeed :)
  •
Erdem, I wonder if there is any section on the website that include resources/guidelines for teachers. E.g. how to integrate those simulations in the classrooms.
  •
Canan, I hope it will help, thank you, Hocam, there are just materials in the pool. I downloaded 10th grade math teacher guidelines released by Ministry of Education and started to read some sections. I saw that they offer recommendations like "using a dynamic math software, students do...". However, I don't know if they will handle the learning and usage of such software in in-service trainings. I wish I could bring more information about the system but they have not answered my CV and my sample work yet,

Constructivist Science Lesson Plan - 0 views

  •
I believe that this lesson plan is a very good example of a constructivist lesson plan for a science lesson. It has many steps that involve the student actively. And as I read I felt that the student is not only hands on, but minds on also. What I mean is that it is clearly a process-oriented plan. Even if the student can't do well in some steps, there are other activities that he can accomplish and enjoy. Also the stress on group work is evident, student can learn from each other and take responsibility. Evaluation part is also very clear, explained to the students with a rubric and it relies on presentations and all the wprk students gather till that day. Making the family involved is another strong part of this plan to me. The things that may not work can be that it takes one month totally, so to keep the attention of the students on the same topic for such a time may be hard, maybe the project could last like two or three weeks. Also the organization of the peer groups is critical.

Collection of all critiques to Multiple Intelligence Theory -in one page- - 3 views

You will find all authors and their related work that criticizes MI theory. One notable and recent critique that Turkish academicians made: DECIPHERING THE THEORY OF MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES: AN ISLAMIC PERSPECTIVE http://www.ijbssnet.com/journals/Vol._2_No._11_[Special_Issue-June_2011]/32.pdf

After reading the article from Turkish authors I felt the need to look their affiliation. An it was not Faculty of "İlahiyat" but it was seriously Faculty of Education.
  •
Dincer, I had enough patience to glance through the article. I don't think these arguments have any scientific basis!!
  •
Agreed! But I posted this for us to see and be aware of some people in Turkish Education. Thanks for your time and comment.
  •
For the first time I see that a scientific theory is tried to be challenged by a divine source rather than a scientific source. In my opinion, scientific debates should rely on scientific data and reasoning. Since divine sources describe an eternal truth, such sources make scientific debates and progress meaningless. In that sense, I think that this article's applicability and validity is open to discussion. Thank you Dinçer, it was one of the most interesting articles that I have run across so far.

THE World University Rankings - 1 views

I also saw the rankings. However, I am not sure if the results are reliable. I did not feel anything about our progress :),

Erdem, this is the list about reputation. They are asking academicians about reputed universities around the world. METU has been actively involved in the international projects and quite a big number of professors were mobilized from the US, Europe, and Canada in the last couple years. However, Turkey has the lowest budget in the list. That creates problems with getting the funds that are needed to create quality research, and thus increase the number of high impact research and publications.
  •
Hocam, today I have read about the details from news and also had conversation with my friends at work, the results actually seems to be reliable and proud. And yes, METU has the lowest budget!.

  •
Bence de, kullanılan fiil de her maddede "best" fiili,
  •
Thomson Reuters Scale was being used to determine the results.
  •
On another list run by METU itself, URAP, METU comes 489th in 2012 listing, not URAP but for THE having so much impact on worldwide scale I'm not sure how free it is from political influence.

Some news about new Turkish Education System - 2 views

  •
I am not totally sure about annually students school leaving rates (from elementary school to secondary school) but thousands of students (esp. girls) left their schools, unfortunately.
  •
Sinem, this is such an important number and a big problem in Turkey. Now, researchers are trying to identify the reasons for dropout and taking measures to prevent that happening in other countries. Yet, this is such an under-researched area in Turkey.
  •
on a report published in 2011, I remember reading a statement that goes like 40 - 45 of 15 year-olds do not go to school regularly in Turkey! I hadn't expected such a percentage!

9 essential books for grad school (and beyond) in Education - 2 views

"a small library of nine valuable books that will help Ph.D. students do serious work-as well as helping supervisors do a solid job in supervising… These books can help to teach and develop good research habits, habits of mind and habits of behavior."
  •
Dincer, I am glad you shared these resources here. They definitely help grad students to make this challenging journey an enjoyable one. I plan to give a workshop on "how to survive in graduate school" in the near future if I manage to find some time to do so.

I'll be the first one to join that workshop :)

New paper of Reigeluth: "Instructional Theory and Technology for the New Paradigm of Education" - 2 views

  •
This article describes instructional theory that supports post-industrial education and training systems - ones that are customized and learner-centered, in which student progress is based on learning rather than time. The article describes universal methods of instruction, situational methods, core ideas of the post-industrial paradigm of instruction, the importance of and problems with task-based instruction, a vision of an instructional theory for post-industrial education and training, and the roles that may be played by the teacher, the learner, and technology in the new paradigm. Keywords: Instructional theory, post-industrial paradigm, task-basd instruction
  •
Is this Reigeluth's recent publication? I plan to include this in the reading list for next year. Thanks for sharing.
  •
I saw the news on Kursat Hoca's FB profile. It is published in Magazine about Distance Education (Revista de Educación a Distancia). I like the idea of learning without time constraints. I don't know why :)

piaget's stages of development - 0 views

Thanks for sharing. I made several Piagetian experiment to my 2 year old cousin and since she was in preoperational stage, she could not answer them correctly:), Yengem was offended since she thought that her daughter was not smart enough, and my aim was to show that. I told about the theory and now she knows about Piaget too, that's science:).
  •
Your are lucky, erdem. You can apply this theory in your cousin's life. When I was watching television during this holiday, I realised that a program gives information about how parents act their children according to their age. They were using the same theory and also behaviorism. They use reinforcement and punishment, token economy, and especially time out method. After our behaiviorism section, I realised that I can elaborate this program according to the knowledge. So parents may be aware of their child's development after this programme and us. Why not? :)
  •
It is really weird to watch the reasonings and answers although we read that they are so. I was surprised once again.
  •
Yes hatice, actually I can go on applying the theory to my cousin by hiding it from Yengem, it is unethical I know:). May be I should wait until I have my own children. I can give permission myself to apply Piaget's theory to my children, no problem:), I agree saime, in one ofthe video a little girl was shown a simple triangle and was asked to draw exactly what she saw, and she drew a different sketch and showed the corners of her triangle that was completely in different places. It was in the video that Evrim Hoca posted to Diigo, I guess.
