Week 7:Apyrl Poch describes different strategies in which teachers can present word problems to students. She discusses how representation is very important when teaching students how to solve different word problems. Incorporating these types of strategies in your instruction will help your students. This is important because it can help you teach your students how to solve different word problems. It gives the instructor different strategies to use in their classroom to reach success.

Week 9: Daniel Light presents this article about keeping students engaged while in Math. It is so important to keep your students engaged while learning. When students are engaged, they are more likely to stay focused and motivated while learning. Thus, students will retain the information because they are focused and motivated. Daniel Light provides strategies to do this in math class.

This power point presentation points out the challenges of differentiating instruction in the classroom. It provides several definitions of what is differentiated instruction. Provides information 4 classroom elements that can be differentiated. Points out the obstacles teacher may face when attempting to differentiate instruction. Discusses CRIME: Curriculum, Rules, Instructions, Materials, and Environment. The presentation also gives some really great strategies for differentiated instruction towards the end.

From the abstract: "This article presents a reflective case study analysis of an attempt to enhance student learning through the introduction of student-centred teaching methods in a masters-level social research methods subject. The introduction of a range of specific techniques, including case study teaching, problem based learning, groupwork, role-play and simulation, is reflected upon. The article concludes that the re-orientation of the curriculum toward student-centredness in this case had a positive effect on student performance, learning experience and subject evaluation. In particular, the use of student-centred techniques facilitated a strong social context for learning, and provided students with a common experiential framework from which to explore the technical aspects of the curriculum. However, the analysis also found that students continued to place value on more formal teaching methods, and that the value of student-centred techniques in this case rested in the way in which they were integrated with more didactic teaching practice"

This site is so much fun to design for students and even parents. It has awesome color themes and backdrops and offers a really fun way to get across information. It's like a homepage you can create with links to other sites, videos, pictures and more. Our school has a page and the kids really enjoy using it for library resources and etc. I am going to be using this for my class page this fall. I think this site is targeted for fifth grade and up. Younger students may be able to use some of the basic features, but it would require some instruction from the teacher.

I have used Glogster to replace a paper poster in the classroom. The students really enjoyed the chance to have a different presentation of a product.

This article shows that through reflective teaching and coaching, diverse struggling readers can beneficiate from different strategies and will help to close instructional gaps.

I like the ideas presented here, they elaborate on the need for ELL students to have word association and phonetic instruction to further their understanding of content. This is particularly stressed in the elementary grades, however having a teaching coach for ELL learners in the higher grades could assist students that did not have phonetic instruction in the lower grades. One particular item of interest was the comment made that data results from assessment is not analyzed until later in the year and as a result does not benefit the students that took the assessment. Due to this the author stresses the need for collaboration of the teaching team to identify skills and strategies needed and subsequently develop ways to address the skill or strategy needed that will enhance learning.

This paper gives a broad overview of key historical and current theories to language development and learning. It provides a nice overview and review of various approaches and schools of thought. The author's premise is that teachers should look both collectively and uniquely at these in order to make informed instructional decisions when teaching students who are learning a second language, either English as a second language or another foreign language. While the information is not new, it is a well-presented consolidation of information that educators can use to diversify their instructional approach to promote language development in their students.

This article presents the main ideas for planning effective and engaging lessons. It is based on backwards design so that the lessons are based on outcomes rather than just the activities. This article is also based on the DAP model that allows for the fact that students develop at their own pace. There is also a review of helpful lesson planning skills in assessment, direct instruction, differentiating instruction and developing objectives.

This article discusses challenges teachers face with differentiated instruction. Every challenge presented if followed by links to articles that relate to the challenge and webinars to watch. The challenge of helping students with special needs and disabilities is very interesting since this goes with my groups data meeting 2 exploratory question.

This module includes videos and handouts that you can view on your own or present to others. Objectives are to "develop an understanding of how to use multiple data sources, analyze data to trace the causes of low achievement and find solutions, and articulate how to support teachers' use of data to improve instruction."

Strategies that can be used when taking a reading test. Although the information presented is for students, they can be taught by a teacher gradual to build a tool box for students.

Learning and memory specialist Marilee Sprenger writes about vocabulary critical to the Common Core and offers 11 strategies for helping students learn it.

Vocabulary strategies presented here makes it necessary to be reflective of how new words are introduced to students. The strategies require students to interact beyond knowing how to correctly spell a word but how a word is used and what it means for students to engage with the word.

I love Edutopia! Some of their resources are really great. I think that this specific article is FANTASTIC for information about how to teach students the critical vocabulary necessary for them to become successful 21st Century Learners!

The importance of short term goals in data driven decision making is addressed. It also discusses streamlining data so that teachers actually have time to create interventions, rather than just take assessments and read data.

This article is very resourceful in presenting ideas to create a data environment without inclusion of anxiety or pressure. In collecting and representing data, this article discusses several ways to display the data and set short term acceptable goals.

This paper presents one step in a multi-step process to improve concurrent support of ELLs' academic literacy development. It explains how literacy can close the gap between ELL's and Native English students. It also explains the process to build up literacy in the classroom, explains the 5 components of literacy, and gives evidence that that without literacy, ELLs are less likely to master content.

Motivation is a major issue in increasing participation as related to my group's exploratory question. This article discusses how integrating technology into the classroom can help improve student motivation and participation.

I agree that this is a great article for us to use when addressing our exploratory question. Motivation is certainly a key piece with students attempting their work. I do like the concept of "Presenting to a Larger Audience" as it inspires students to compete and to do well as there more eyes on their work. Integrating multimedia into the core curriculum would be beneficial as well, though would be difficult to implement in schools that have limited technological resources.

Debategraph is a fantastic tool for individual and group study. It is perfect for organizing thoughts, ideas and facts. You can create bullet points and subcategories of information. On Debategraph you can map your ideas and collaborate with team members. I used Debate graph on my website in 605 as a language arts tool. Its a an ideal tool for brainstorming and organizing a persuasive or informative argument. Students can also present information using the debategraph as a visual. Best, Denee Devenish

This a great tool where you can post questions or comments on a wall that is interactive. We used it during a school wide staff meeting and it worked really well. It served as a "parking lot" for questions so it didn't disrupt the flow of the meeting. We also had other teachers and administrators responding to the questions/comments in real time. See the description below.. Brainstorm with students from your own school or from other schools. This program allows you to post stickers with your ideas onto a virtual wall. You can embed your wall on a website or blog.

Brandon, This is a great tool. I have been in staff meeting where it has taken much longer than it should have, but this allows for questions to be answered while information is being presented. This tool was very easy to use and like that it can be embeded into a website or blog. Thank you for sharing. Rich

(Week Nine: Ruchel and Beth) This article is accessible through the UMUC library via Document Express. This journal article is about differentiated instruction when it comes to teaching students the alphabet. The article highlights the fact that "Early literacy experiences vary widely... and children show substantial differences in their alphabet knowledge development. Thus, children in the same early childhood classroom may exhibit differing levels of alphabet knowledge" (Piasta, 2014). Teachers can use this article to further their instructional practice by using the strategies and assessments discussed in the article to work with students in ways that will help the individual child learn all the letters verses a whole class approach to teaching the alphabet. The article discuses how, "The familiarity of children with letters included in their own first names, for example, has long been observed" (Piasta, 2014). But when it comes to teaching the alphabet in a whole class approach teachers are not acknowledging "differences across letters, often providing the same amount and types of instructional activities for each of the 26 letters irrespective of the ease or difficulty of learning a particular letter (Piasta, 2014). The article provides an idea that all "Early childhood educators may wish to assess all the children in their classrooms or may first use established alphabet screening assessments" (Piasta, 2014). It is also helpful for educators "To conduct a diagnostic alphabet assessment, an educator presents a child with each of the 26 letters and asks the child to supply the name and/or sound for each letter. The educator marks whether the child supplied a correct name and/or sound. Although the assessment can be scored in terms of the total number of correct letter names or sounds (i.e., 0 to 26), most important for diagnostic purposes are which letter names and sounds the child knows (Piasta, 2014)...

...The article finds that small group learning "has been demonstrated to be more effective than whole-class or even one-to-one instruction in supporting young children's early literacy development (Piasta, 2014). The article also stresses the fact that educators should "plan and use effective teaching practices to deliver alphabet instruction on the selected letters. Alphabet instruction can take place in many fun, engaging, and authentic contexts" (Piasta, 2014). In closing, "Outside of planned alphabet instruction, educators may also take advantage of additional "teachable moments" to review and reinforce children's alphabet learning whenever these occur" (Piasta, 2014).
