March 1st, MobileMonday Toronto will open the floor for prospective mobile entrepreneurs to pitch their business ideas to some of Canada's leading Venture Capital companies. The event is focused on raising capital for mobile ventures.The event will take place at the MaRS Centre.

The number of Canadians purchasing smartphones may be rising, but an overwhelming number of Canadians continue to use their mobile devices for the most basic functions - texting and taking pictures, according to Delvinia Dig, a quarterly report on the digital behaviours and attitudes of Canadian consumers.

Toronto Life talks about the hotbed of mobile apps in Toronto. Prominently featured is MaRS client, Polar Mobile. They develop apps for more than 150 companies, including Sports Illustrated, Time, CNN, CBS and the Food Network. Their apps have been downloaded six million times and counting.

MaRS announced the creation of JOLT, a new technology accelerator dedicated to building high-growth web and mobile companies that promise to transform the way consumers and enterprises connect, work and play. 

Flybits is a MaRS Innovation spinoff company from Ryerson University. Flybits has developed an innovative, context-aware software as a service framework called FARE (Flybits Activity Recognition Engine). "Flybits CEO and Founder Hossein Rahnama was among the entrepreneurs of Ryerson University's Digital Media Zone to meet the Prince of Wales and demonstrate his cloud-based and context-aware software solution."

Deena Douara, a MaRS Client has developed a mobile phone app that can alert authorities if a potential emergency situation arises called "WalkSafe." Douara completed the Entrepreneurship 101 program at MaRS Discovery District.

The following six start-ups will comprise JOLT's first summer cohort: Prof (interactive social education platform), Vennpage (infographics), ShelfLife (social commerce for fans of collectibles), SlingRide (social network for booking rideshare trips), Greengage Mobile (social platform encouraging eco-sustainable practices in the workplace) and tout.it  (social media platform for sports fans).
