Doug Johnson's blog.  School LIbraries are a student right.

I agree. Reading is the foundation of our schools. Variety of reading materials and access is essential. I think this "Bill if Rights" applies to not only the school library, but also the classroom libraries.

About Paul Stamets - Fungi.com - 1 views

  •
Ok, so I know this isn't directly related to our work in particular disciplines, as educators.  However, if we are interested in sustainability, and preserving a context or environment, quite literally, for our life long learners, this man's work is interesting.  I just heard him interviewed on the radio.  At first I thought he might be crazy.  Clearly he isn't.  Are we listening?
  •
Hi Susan and all---Paul Stamets' work has been lauded for many years----ecological integrity means the integrity of human communities as well as "mycelial" communities,,,and yes, it is related to education in the most fundamental and visionary of ways. We should listen. "Only connect..."

Visual connects between words. Not working on my iPad.  Great on a smartboard. Both thesaurus and dictionary.

Love this one! I just had a lovely time searching for several obscure words---all the arcs and webs among words makes it a way to enhance the interconnections and to learn more about how roots work as well. This is one that's easy and fun to use for all ages...I envision making good use of it in AP English.

This is great -- I enjoyed clicking on random and seeing what it came up with -- then I could see what the different colored links signified.

F11 gets rid of all the stuff on the top, for full screen mode.  User friendly.  Put all questions and answers on a google doc, because the link is non recoverable. Write down the password; it is unique to each game.  Save often, there is no auto save.  Get play link and edit link.  Put them in the doc with the questions for later use.

What Will Elementary Look Like? - 0 views

Catrina tweeted this link and I read the article. The challenge of changing the structure will be to meet kids' individual learning needs in the academics -- where cross age groupings are necessary and appropriate (especially in small schools) at the same time allowing time for students to form bonds and work with their social and emotional peers, who are often closer to them chronologically. We need to be experimenting with all kinds of flexible groupings.

Not always defaulting to grouping them by their "date of manufacture", as Sir Ken Robinson states it, can hold so much power motivating, mentoring, differentiating... the list goes on.

Mobilizing Community Conversations in Vermont - 0 views

High school can be a time of great challenge, transition and triumph for teenagers. Social groups are formed and disbanded, students are challenged in new ways by their teachers and by their peers, and there is a great deal of pressure to think about the future.

7 Inspiring TED Talks on the 21st Century Curriculum ~ Educational Technology and Mobil... - 3 views

I watched Liz Coleman's (Bennington College) talk re: "The New Liberal Arts." How heartening to hear someone who understands that we need a "politics of principle, not partisanship" and that the heart of building this body politic is to educate people deeply---and broadly---about the interconnections among disciplines. The cult of worship for the "expert" cannot sustain democratic systems. Thanks,Ellen , for these suggestions.
  •
After reading Melanie's comment I watched Liz Coleman too. Very inspiring. It's important to hear that there are people out there not totally discouraged by our anti-intellectual culture on one hand and the worship of the expert on the other.
  •
I'm confused. My email showed me that Ellen posted this awesome resource, but it isn't showing up on my MALT group page. Reposting with thanks to Ellen. The rigid teacher-centered instruction does not fit in the 21st century classroom. Learning now is more open and networked. Students thrive best in spaces that engage and challenge their thinking and allows them to use the technology that they use in their everyday life.
