So, the brutality and cruelty Emeterio shows with Lope is not only a representation of that conflict, but a vey good painting about Spain and its political forces during the dictatorship and how those who lost the war were treated by winners (specially local tyrants like Emeterio).

As you said, violence begets violence (la violencia engendra violencia) but this a the micro-story and a warning: a brutal and cruel political system as a dictatorship only can get a violent response. Also, Lope is ignorant thanks to his uncle who condemned him to illiteracy, but he is not stupid. He knows that murder was written in his destiny. The end "sí, sí.sí" is not only the words of a man who can not say "no". It is also the only word permitted in a dictatorship where there is an absolute lack of freedom.

The rest of people do not realize about the poor life conditions of Lope probably just because at that time people avoided those whoduring the war were confronting fascist. And because they as well as their families were rejected and marginalized bu those who got power during the war.
