  • The ITEST program through research and model-building activities seeks to build understandings of best practice factors, contexts and processes contributing to K-12 students' motivation and participation in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) core domains along with other STEM cognate domains (e.g., information and communications technology (ICT), computing, computer sciences, data analytics, among others) that inform education programs and workforce domains. The ITEST program funds foundational and applied research projects addressing the development, implementation, and dissemination of innovative strategies, tools, and models for engaging students to be aware of STEM and cognate careers, and to pursue formal school-based and informal out-of-school educational experiences to prepare for such careers.  ITEST supports projects that: (1) increase students' awareness of STEM and cognate careers; (2) motivate students to pursue the appropriate education pathways for STEM and cognate careers; and/or (3) provide students with technology-rich experiences that develop disciplinary-based knowledge and practices, and non-cognitive skills (e.g., critical thinking and communication skills) needed for entering STEM workforce sectors. ITEST projects may adopt an interdisciplinary focus on one or more STEM domains or focus on sub discipline(s) within a domain. ITEST projects must involve students, and may also include teachers. ITEST is especially interested in broadening participation of student groups from traditionally underrepresented in STEM and cognate intensive education and workforce domains. Strongly encouraged are projects that actively engage business and industry to better ensure K-12 experiences are likely to foster the skill-sets of emerging STEM and cognate careers.  ITEST supports two project types: Strategies and SPrEaD (Successful Project Expansion and Dissemination) projects. Strategies projects address the creation and implementation of innovative technology-related interventions that support ITEST's objectives. SPrEaD projects support the wider and broader dissemination and examination of innovative interventions to generate evidence and understanding regarding contextual factors that operate to enhance, moderate, or constrain the desired results. All ITEST projects include activities designed to inform judgments regarding the feasibility of implementing strategies in typical delivery settings such as classrooms and out-of-school settings.

    This site would be useful for my students when I get my own classroom of students with special needs because it gives you many examples of different kinds and examples of technologies and tools that you can consider using.  Another reason it will be useful because for all of the softwares, it gives you reviews, which will help save time so you can just read them, instead of using the softwares and finding out their weaknesses.  Technologies is a huge way that students with special needs can get the most out of the learning in their classroom.

  • Recently, technology has made parent-teacher communication easier and more time-efficient than ever before. Telephones, voicemail, and internet technology all allow fast communication about such things as homework assignments, behavior problems, and classroom highlights. The internet is the most recent tool being used for school communication. With some training, teachers can set up class websites with information that the parents are able to view at any time. E-mail communication is beneficial because messages can be sent at any time and the other person does not need to be available to respond immediately (Graham-Clay, 2005). However, in 2004, only 74.9% of U.S. households with a phone line had access to the internet (Merkley, Schmidt, Dirksen, & Fuhler, 2006). While the internet has proven useful in parent-teacher communication, schools must keep in mind that not all families have internet access and must offer less technologically advanced forms of communication such as written notes and telephone calls as well (Graham-Clay, 2005). For schools and families with internet access, e-mail messages are quickly beginning to replace traditional written notes. E-mail messages are more immediate and efficient than written notes. Some parents are able to check their e-mail during the day at work and know immediately how their child's day at school is progressing. E-mail messages are also more likely to reach parents because students cannot "accidentally" forget to deliver or misplace them. E-mail can increase the ease and frequency of communication because it allows teachers to write one message and send it simultaneously to all of the parents in the class (Patton, Jayanthi, & Polloway, 2001). Websites have been created to help parents assist their children with their homework assignments. Homework Central (www.homeworkcentral.com) is a popular, comprehensive site that provides students and parents with study skills and homework assistance for a variety of subjects. Some schools have begun to develop similar websites of their own. These websites increase parents' confidence in their homework assisting skills which makes it more likely that they will become involved at homework time (Patton et al., 2001).

  • Parents are worried about safety.  Internet has the potential to expose children and youth to inappropriate information.  One click of the mouse and children are on websites that have questionable content and may be unsuitable for their age.

In recent years, there has been a significant shift from traditional teacher-directed educational instruction to student-centered learning activities that promote interactive engagement, individual responsibility, and self-assessment. This is not to say that the role of the teacher in the classroom has diminished. In fact, teachers today now have the additional challenge of designing curriculum and learning activities that not only meet and exceed existing learning standards and prepare for the coming Common Core initiative, but also actively involve students in the development, implementation, and evaluation of their own educational experiences. Utilizing iPad technology, educators have the ability to integrate these student-centered learning activities into proven curriculum strategies and educational methods. For example, a teacher may assign a standards-based research project that requires student groups to utilize the iPad to develop an interactive audio / visual presentation. As part of the assessment process, students can exchange iPads and evaluate their peers' projects through "hands-on" engagement. On an individual level, the interactive touch screen of the iPad fosters interest and encourages students to master skills and strategies that have been previously introduced in class. The portable nature of the iPad also makes it possible for students to easily share information with classmates.
