In contrast to traditional paper-pencil tasks, interactive technology is providing many alternative methods for students to demonstrate what they have learned. Computers are powerful tools for students with special needs and should be utilized as much as possible.With the use of technology students who have difficulty getting their thoughts on paper because of poor handwriting skills, can write their thoughts with the use of a keyboard. A child whose visual processing disorder makes reading difficult can use his stronger auditory skills to listen to a recording of a book. When the visual book is utilized together with the auditory recording, the child receives the benefit of matching the sound with the words. This has the potential of improving his reading skills.

  • 1. Get Some Training. You don't have to become a computer expert, but you need to have some basic understanding of how computers operate and what to do when they do not operate properly. You should also become familiar with a web browser such as Firefox or Internet Explorer and websites that provide tech-integration resources and tutorials. Your school or college likely has an instructional technology specialist to help you in this regard. 2. Don't Re-invent the Wheel. There are plenty of credible and experienced educational technology organizations, administrators and teachers out there who can lead you to quality materials, lesson plans and activities for use in your classroom. You don't have to spend hours using search engines to locate appropriate sites and materials. Some of the best educational Web sites for integrating technology in the classroom are: Center for History and New Media Classroom 2.0Edutopia Discovery Education: Kathy Schrock "Guide for Educators"PBS Teachers: Media InfusionThinkfinity 3. Establish a Partnership with Your Students. Many of your students will be excited about computer use, but you and they may be apprehensive about how technology will change your learning environment. Tell your students that computer use in your classroom is new and exciting for you as well, and that you are all part of an experiment whose ultimate success will largely depend on your combined efforts and cooperation. Stress how special this educational opportunity is and how much you need their input. Remember, it's about the students, not you. Your students will probably appreciate you asking for their help, and it may spur them to take ownership of the program. It also may soften some frustrations when technical problems occur. 4. Have a Plan B Ready. You are going to run into some technical difficulties in class and how you handle them will go a long way in determining how successful and enjoyable your technology experience is. You can minimize unwanted surprises by getting some training from an instructional technology specialist and by minimizing your reliance on live web connections. However, you will invariably run into technical problems during class that you are not able to solve immediately. In such instances, if you appear overly perturbed and frustrated you will send a signal to your students that they too can moan about technical problems and perhaps use them as excuses to forego completing computer-based work. Even worse, you may inadvertently cause them to question the ultimate merit of computer-based learning. Instead, try to make a smooth transition to a backup lesson plan, thereby sending a signal that technical glitches are just part of your educational adventure.

This wiki has links to all of his presentations and includes great overviews and tables of apps for education. iEAR Apps Review (7) -- This wonderful site run by Scott Meech (8) includes app reviews by educators for educators. App reviews are organized by category for easy searching. iPads in Schools Livebinder (9) -- Mike Fisher (10) has pulled together a ton of resources on using iPads in the classroom. There is a tab for "App of the Week" as well as a tab for "Best Free Apps." Android4Schools (11) -- This site, started by Richard Byrne (12) (of Free Tech 4 Teachers (13) fame), is dedicated to all things Android. It's a great place for educators not using iOS (aka Apple) devices or those involved in BYOD initiatives. Edutecher (14) -- A website and an app itself, this site is created and maintained by Adam Bellow (15) and allows users to search for apps by subject area and grade level.

  • In today's classroom, teachers find that they often have to compete with technology to keep students interest. It's important to recognize that a) students use this technology b) they will use it in class. Short of taking students' smart phones, tablets, etc. away from them at the beginning of each class, most teachers have to learn to work with technology in the classroom. The struggle to deal with inappropriate technology use in the classroom can be mitigated to some degree by integrating its use into the lesson. Below you will find a number of suggestions. Tip 3: Use Email to Your Advantage It's often useful to send out an email to students with resources that you want to use during the lesson. If you want to use web resources, create a class email list to send out a short update with clickable URLs that students can use to access materials. There is nothing that will slow a class down more than writing a long, unwieldy URL on the board and asking students to type it into their smart phone, iPad, etc. to access. Tip 4: Set Up a Class Blog / Learning Site There are numerous online services that allow teachers to set up an easy to maintain class blog / site. You can use this to post assignments, give homework, keep students informed with resources, etc. Ask students to bookmark the homepage and you can provide a short blog posts with resources students can use during a specific lesson as suggested in using email. This makes using students' gadgets even easier! Tip 5: Revisit Common Software in Terms of Learning Possibilities Take time to find out what software packages students are using on a daily basis. Once you have a short list, spend some time with the packages to find out what tools they provide to help out with English learning. For example, using a text editor such as Word for Windows you can help students set up spell check in English as students type. Instruct learners to try to correct their own spelling mistakes signaled by red underling BEFORE they check the correct spelling. With a few simple instructions these tools can become powerful self-study aids. Tip 6: Keep Technology Use Limited and On Task This principal is similar to any teaching task. The more general an objective or activity is, the easier it becomes to lose focus. For example, imagine that you are using a video in class to work on comprehension. Instead of watching an entire episode of a sitcom, use a service such as Hulu or English Attack! to watch individual scenes. This will help you students keep integrate new vocabulary, improve their comprehension through repetition. Tip 7: Have a Backup Plan Always have a backup plan in place when technology fails. Unfortunately, this still happens and it's a shame to have to change lesson focus entirely just because Windows needs to install the latest version of Flash to play a video. Tip 8: Use an Interactive Whiteboard If you work at a school with deep pockets, I highly recommend working with an interactive whiteboard.   • The Challenges Faculty training still does not acknowledge the fact that digital media literacy continues its rise in importance as a key skill in every discipline and profession. Teachers needs to be learning how to use the technology themselves, too. Where formal training lacks, professional development needs to step in, and does in many cases. But integrating the how-to of technology with the how-to of teaching needs to happen. The emergence of new scholarly forms of authoring, publishing, and researching outpace sufficient and scalable modes of assessment. The traditional approaches to scholarly evaluation don’t always match up with the more ‘modern’ forms of research (things that include social media use, online collaborations, etc). Though these things often happen in the real world, the academic decision makers who deem what is acceptable and what is not haven’t caught up yet. Too often it is education’s own processes and practices that limit broader uptake of new technologies. Things like the promotion and tenure process don’t lend themselves well to integrating technology – that is, if you’re working towards tenure and your field of specialization isn’t education technology, figuring this stuff out is not on the top of the priority list (or even encouraged). MOOCs are huge – and proponents are constantly touting the advantages, but we need to assess both the pros and cons of these new learning models and look at how they fit in with existing models of learning and assessment, too. Most academics are not using new technologies for learning and teaching, nor for organizing their own research. How can you teach using digital methods and expect students to use the if you don’t bother to try? The overwhelming attitude in higher education (according to the report) seems to be that these sorts of forays into technology bring the focus to the technology rather than on the material at hand, and so there is no expectation or drive to do so.
