    The primary aim of DOAB is to increase discoverability of Open Access books. Academic publishers are invited to provide metadata of their Open Access books to DOAB. Metadata will be harvestable in order to maximize dissemination, visibility and impact. Aggregators can integrate the records in their commercial services and libraries can integrate the directory into their online catalogues, helping scholars and students to discover the books. The directory will be open to all publishers who publish academic, peer reviewed books in Open Access and should contain as many books as possible, provided that these publications are in Open Access and meet academic standards.

  • Le risque d'enfermer les livres uniquement dans des conteneurs dédiés est de laisser sur le côté ceux qui ne lisent pas. Ceux qui ne lisent pas n'iront pas se perdre dans l'iBookstore d'Apple. Ils liront peut-être d'autres choses en ligne, mais n'arriveront jamais jusqu'aux livres.
  • Quand on regarde l'usage des tablettes et smartphone, la lecture (de livre) occupe une part toujours plus faible des usages à mesure que le nombre d'utilisateurs augmente.

  • Quand on observe la fréquence d'usage des applications de lecture par semaine et dans la durée, on se rend compte qu'entre 2009 et 2012, l'usage des applications de lecture s'est effondré. En 2009, on utilisait des applications de lecture très fréquemment chaque semaine, mais sur une durée assez courte (le temps de lire le livre), en 2012, la fréquence d'accès à une application de lecture est tombée et la durée de lecture s'est allongée. Les livres électroniques ne sont plus dans les usages intensifs sur une période de temps limitée, mais sont entrés dans la catégorie des usages occasionnels.
  • On comprendra alors qu'éditeurs comme auteurs commencent à envisager sérieusement à exploiter d'autres canaux de diffusion, comme le web. Le livre électronique ne se suffira pas à lui-même. Le moment e-book n'est pas clos, mais on sent qu'il est déjà en train de tourner.
