Bruce McCandliss, professor in Stanford's Graduate School of Education and the director of the Stanford Center for Mind, Brain and Computation, speaks about brain-imaging technology that is revolutionizing the study of educational experiences and their effect on the brain.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. In her TEDxJacksonville talk, she vividly depicts the incalculable value of memory and movement, and the devastating biological effects of these diseases on the brain. She also details recent advances in computing technology that may help elucidate treatment targets for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. "We are now building revolutionary computer simulations of neurons," she explains, "so we can have better insight into the molecular behaviors of neural cells so we can see a play-by-play of the interworking of neurons rather than static pictures frozen in time."

This could be addition to Elanur's "All in the mind?" post. There is often a big divide between what happens in the laboratory and the way laboratory findings are practically applied. The relationship between neuroscience research and education is no exception. While there are numerous educational products that claim to be based on neuroscience research (often quite dubiously so), the real impact of brain-based research on education has been much more subtle.

There is no agreement on whether studying the way the brain works can help improve educational outcomes, but the discussion is a hot topic amongst educational experts.

As methods of imaging the brain improve, neuroscientists and educators can now identify changes in children's brains as they learn, and start to develop ways of personalizing instruction for kids who are falling behind.

When decisions with important consequences involved, people ask for expert opinion let it be a hotel booking (trip advisor, booking...) or purchasing a book (amazon recommends, kitapyurdu...). If the stakes are high, then it becomes obligatory to go and ask for expert opinion. However this becomes a problem if people rely on experts as if they are getting parental advice. People become addicted to experts because of its certainity, assuredness and definitiveness. In a study, a group of adults' brains' MRI scans when they are listening to experts showed that the independent part of their decision making part of their brains switches off while they are listening. This listening becomes unquestionnable and they use these opinions without distinguishing as right or wrong. Considering the doctors who misdiagnose 4 out of 10, not questionning is an important issue. As a result the role of the expert should change because they are affected by social norms, cultural norms and everything. So their judgements may differ. Think about companies who try to sell their products and include experts in the process. Toothpaste, washing detergents etc. are exagerated. Although they are experts, they have assumptions which may have flaws. People should question and become skeptical about experts. People should not blindly accept or listen, rather they should open their eyes wide open, face the world, use experts for certain things but be aware of their limitations and also their own.

This study conducted in Standford University School of Medicine reveals that brain scans from 8-year-old children can predict gains in their mathematical ability over the next six years. That is a great development to learn students' math ability and provide proper type and level of education accordingly.

By regulating the synapses, they control the transfer of information between neurons, affecting how the brain processes information. This new finding could be critical for technologies based on brain networks, as well as provide a new avenue for research into disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and epilepsy.

One of the living science legends, Ramachandran, who is well known for his studies in neuroscience, talks about the influence of 'mirror neurons' in our lives. This video has some implications for complex social learning and for interconnectedness among people happening as a result of our interacting brains.

Its a whole course. Valuable resource for teachers. Similar examples, particularly in Turkey, can bridge the gap between neuroscience findings with the teaching practice.

This video is quite informative and illustrative for explaining brain's plasiticity and connectivity. It also establishes an analogy between Internet and Child's Brain, which worths to watch.
