TPACK Newsletter Issue #31 - 2 views

    www.tpack.org is considered the top community for TPACK. They send out newsletters bimonthly or trimonthly, which includes the recent papers, presentations in conferences, blog entries, dissertations and theses written or published related to TPACK. It is an incredibly vast resource, and subscribing is really easy and free of charge. All you have to do is send a blank e-mail to "sympa@lists.wm.edu" with the subject line "subscribe TPACK.news NAME SURNAME".     A learner-centred school in Turkey? I really wonder how these students will perform at university entrance exam. Pass or fail? I am really curious about the results.

    I cjecked the socie-economic status of the families. Families seem to be high in terms of socie-economic status. This made me think that the students will not worry about university enterance exams, since they will have some opportunity to enter some private ones.

    Yess, this is the school I mentioned earlier and I couldn't remember their name. I also follow them on Twitter. Such an innovative approach! I think we need more alternative models.     I think this is certainly a more situated-learning based school as there is no exam threat :) However, we should completely change the system, if we want to apply this schooling all over Turkey. With our system, we can't even fulfill "learning" because of the hundreds of exams. We just try to pass the exams with grade anxiety. Also, what about the socio-economically disadvantaged schools? They don't have such a luxury, I think.

    most probably you have heard that Summerhill School in England. It is a boarding school founded by A.S. Neill in 1921 and its basic principle is the school should be made to fit the child, rather than the child should be made to fit the school.     There is this point that I totally agree with Burcu about disadvantaged groups. Also whenever I think about examples like Sudbury Valley, I get impressed by the idea of getting rid of exam threat. But for our country, we have to change like everything, the belief systems, the culture, the attitudes. We have a lot do to in that respect, even if our main intention to make just a small change.

    Lee S. Shulman is an educational psychologist having notable contributions to the study of teaching, assessment of teaching, learning, science and mathematics. He is a retired professor from Stanford Graduate School of Education, past president of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, past president of the American Educational Research Association. Shulman is best known for popularizing the phrase "pedagogical content knowledge" (PCK). Shulman claimed that the emphases on teachers' subject knowledge and pedagogy were being treated as mutually exclusive. He thought that teacher education programs should combine these knowledge fields.

    Punya Mishra is a professor of educational technology and director of the Master of Arts in Educational Technology program. He is nationally and internationally recognized for his work on the theoretical, cognitive and social aspects related to the design and use of computer-based learning environments. He has worked extensively in the area of technology integration in teacher education which led to the development (in collaboration with M. J. Koehler) of the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework, which has been described as "the most significant advancement in the area of technology integration in the past 25 years." He has received over $4 million in grants, published over 45 articles and book chapters and edited two books. Dr. Mishra is an award-winning instructor who teaches courses at both the masters and doctoral levels in the areas of educational technology, design and creativity. He is a gifted, creative and engaging public speaker, having made multiple keynote and invited presentations for associations and conferences nationally and internationally.
    My dream is to work with him and Ann Thompson and also taking TPACK badge.:)

    This research proves to be another evidence of the importance of combining both technological and pedagogical knowledge (excluding content knowledge for this case as it is not mentioned). I think the impact of flipped classes can be larger when it is known what and how to do with the technology.

    This classes can have no effect on students learning, in a short term. For me, a study should measure the long term effect of the flipped classroom. This point can be missed. there is need for not only summative but also confirmative evaluation.

    As a language teacher, I've felt really interested in such a change in the instructional process. I always need more time for activities and hands-on experiences; however, I fail to have. I think if the initial preparations are well-organized and students are provided with effective support, flipped classrooms idea may work better than the traditional classes. Therefore, I disagree with the researchers who have found no significant difference in learning. One research may not set a good example for a generalization.

    I checked it also but when I made an error(Of course it was in purpose B-) the feedback was not like a feedback. And I am also curious what is the meaning of those triangles and trees on the coordinate system according to designer.

    I think the designers of these kind of tutors rely on some accepted design principles like representing student competence or minimize working memory load, but they also follow pedagogical guidelines which impose them to find the most appropriate ID model. Since the analogy might be taken too literally they do not prefer to build an ITS modeled on human tutors. So I think there is no specific ID model for the designers but it should be an employee rather than an employer.

    I reallu like this application. Students can learn both geometri and how they can draw their way not to crash some objects. But The sam question came my mindwith Filiz, is this develop higher order thinking skills?

    This study is the latest one, to my knowledge, conducted in English language teaching field in Turkey in terms of TPACK. I do not think that this study is a powerful one because it fails to provide a vivid picture in terms of preservice EFL teachers' TPACK competencies.     At first glance, yes, you are the champions :), but this is only one study and it is conducted with a certain group of people. We don't know what kind of results we'll have with a different group. This means I expect you to show more evidences in favor of your "champion" title :).

'Possum Magic': embedding technology in deep learning | Teaching Teachers for the Future - 2 views

    A video in which there is an example of how TPACK is used in hands on context in learning of Biology and Maths. Possum magic' demonstrates the key elements of TPACK in a hands-on learning context. Students at Pallara State School in Queensland monitor possum activity using 24 hour surveillance cameras linked to their classroom computers. They learn Science, Biology and Maths content through this project. Pedagogical knowledge, content knowledge and technological knowledge are embedded and integrated in an authentic deep learning collaboration.

Scientists have found that making a mistake can feel rewarding, though, if the brain is given the opportunity to learn from its mistakes and assess its options.

    "Scientists have long understood that the brain has two ways of learning. One is avoidance learning, which is a punishing, negative experience that trains the brain to avoid repeating mistakes. The other is reward-based learning, a positive, reinforcing experience in which the brain feels rewarded for reaching the right answer." The "avoidance learning" is which I have learned from my father thanks to his raising children technique. He always wanted that we, as his children, should be faultless. And that understanding (of course he is not a pedagog :)) affected me negatively in my subsequent years. In fact, the second one, reward-based learning, is essential if someone wants to apply discussion and peer learning in his/her classroom as students who avoid making mistakes will avoid having communication with others, generating assertive questions, defend his/her arguments, asking help even if s/he struck at a ridiculous point, etc. Making mistakes is a part of learning. We need to emphasize this in our classrooms.
