Fraudulent Defense Contractors Paid $1 Trillion

The Big Money economy is booming. According to a new Commerce Department report, third-quarter profits of American businesses rose at an annual record-breaking $1.659 trillion - besting even the boom year of 2006 (in nominal dollars). Profits have soared for seven consecutive quarters now, matching or beating their fastest pace in history. Executive pay is linked to profits, so top pay is soaring as well. Higher profits are also translating into the nice gains in the stock market, which is a boon to everyone with lots of financial assets. And Wall Street is back. Bonuses on the Street are expected to rise about 5 percent this year, according to a survey by compensation consultants Johnson Associates Inc. But nothing is trickling down to the Average Worker economy. Job growth is still anemic. At October's rate of only 50,000 new private-sector jobs, unemployment won't get down to pre-recession levels for twenty years. And almost half of October's new jobs were in temporary help.

On August 1, 2016, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) instituted an IPR petitioned by Unified on a patent owned and asserted by Rothschild Connected Devices Innovations, LLC. On May 19, 2016, Unified Patents Inc. filed a petition for inter partes review, IPR2016-01060, against claims 1-4, 9, 10, and 21 of U.S. Patent 8,933,945, directed to a method for optimizing memory requests by dividing them.

On June 22, 2016, pursuant to a settlement agreement, Unified Patents Inc. filed a motion to terminate their petition for inter partes review, IPR2016-00836, against claims 1-3, 5-7, 9-16 and 19 of U.S. Patent 8,285,648 (owned and recently asserted by Verify Smart Corp.). In IPR2016-01465, Unified challenged a patent directed to automated tracking, one that Shipping and Transit has asserted against more than 90 small businesses. On May 27, 2016, Unified filed a petition for inter partes review (IPR) of claims 1, 4, 6, 7, 10-13, and 16 of U.S. Patent 8,706,627, owned and asserted by Sentegra, LLC in various district courts. The technology is directed to electronic ticketing on a mobile device.

On July 22, 2016, Unified filed for inter partes review of all claims 1-16 of U.S. Patent 7,454,002, owned and asserted by Sportbrain Holdings, Inc. On June 27, 2016, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board instituted IPR on all challenged claims on a patent owned and asserted by the Acacia Research-associated American Vehicular Sciences, LLC. The IPR, IPR2016-00364, challenged 1, 8, 10, 12, 17-19, 26, 27, and 36 of the patent, U.S. 9,043,093.

On June 21, 2016, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) awarded adverse judgment against patent owner Qurio Holdings, Inc., prior to institution, cancelling claims 1-3, 10, 12, and 15-18 of U.S. Patent 7,787,904, as challenged via joinder by Unified in IPR2016-00998.

On August 19, 2016, Unified Patents Inc. filed its 50th inter partes review petition, against a patent owned and asserted by Intellectual Ventures I LLC. The IPR2016-01643 challenges claims 1-4, 6-9, and 11-17 of U.S. Patent No. 6,775,745 B1, currently being asserted in the district court.

On August 29, 2016, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) instituted an IPR filed by Unified Patents Inc. on a patent related to electronic payments. The patent, U.S. Patent 6,891,633, has been asserted against dozens of banking institutions. The Board adopted an initial narrow claim construction and instituted review of claims 1-18 and 21-26 of the patent.
