Google AJAX Language API - Google Code - 0 views

  •
With the AJAX Language API, you can translate and detect the language of blocks of text within a webpage using only Javascript. In addition, you can enable transliteration on any textfield or textarea in your web page. For example, if you were transliterating to Hindi, this API will allow users to phonetically spell out Hindi words using English and have them appear in the Hindi script. The language API is designed to be simple and easy to use to translate and detect languages on the fly when offline translations are not available. We plan on adding more exciting capabilities to the AJAX Language API in the future, so stay tuned. So what is the difference between Translation and Transliteration? Transliteration is the process of phonetically converting a word written in one script into another. Transliteration should not be confused with translation, which involves a change in language while preserving meaning. With transliteration, it is the sound of the words that are converted from one alphabet to the other.

Readability analyzer - 3 views

  • Introduction Word length and phrase length influence the ease of reading and understanding of a given text. Short words are usually more common (Zipf's law). Short sentences require less abstraction ability to understand. The readability analysis could be useful to make a text better, augmenting its accessibility. Why have we developed this? The readability index tells us how easy a given text is to understand. A well-written text is effective, easy to understand and quick to read. This index helps us understand the text's complexity in order to better schedule the activities of translators and revisers. More than ever, written information, especially in the Internet, must be direct and well structured. This analysis can help achieve both goals.

It seems like you can have as many questions as you like. The longest one I created had 45. Here are a couple that I created. Feel free to try them out and answer the questions to see how they work. Development - Is the 140 character 'micro interaction' enough? | Delta Publishing - Eng... - 0 views

Twitter could not possibly be further away from the concept of a computer game or a three dimensional visually rich virtual world. Suddenly instead of learning to fly and exchanging our money for Linden bucks (the currency of Linden Labs' Second Life) we were exchanging grammatically correct sentences for status updates of less than 140 characters! Who could have seen it coming? Perhaps Gartner, who also predicted that "90 Per Cent of Corporate Virtual World Projects Fail Within 18 Months".

The International Phonetic Alphabet - limited free version - 1 views

  •
The following page provides a graphic interface for exploring the International Phonetic Alphabet. To use the resource simply click on any link to hear an illustrative example. For example, most rows in the Pulmonic chart (Manner of Articulation) have descriptive audio that explains each row completely. Other charts (Non-Pulmonic, Vowels etc.) have detailed audio descriptions available by clicking on the chart title. Within each chart, clicking on any IPA character will play an example of that sound. With consonants, you will hear the sound in exclusion followed by an intervocalic example. You will need a recent browser and QuickTime installed on your computer in order to use the page to the fullest. You will also need a UVic NetLinkID to access these copyrighted materials.

Rise in Online Classes Flares Debate About Quality - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  •
Being able to cut-and-paste a Wikipedia answer about Social Darwinism into an online activity for credit suggests to me the need for more inspired activities, rather than a different technology. There are ways to stimulate thinking, rather than copying, about Social Darwinism -- thinking that you couldn't fake, whether that student is thinking in a classroom or at home. Part of what I take from this article is that schools are using online for the wrong reasons and in the wrong way. This shouldn't be an indictment of the medium, but of the way in which it has been integrated into the K12 system.
