I think that we have talked quite a bit about the women in the African American civil rights movement, but we have not really talked about the Chicano civil rights movement and the women involved with this movement. It would be a good idea for us to explore this movement and women in it as well.

Powers turned her attention to her family genealogy, trying to find out more about her great-aunt Celia Mudd, who was born into slavery but eventually inherited the rural Kentucky farm in Nelson County on which she spent all her life. Powers found a 1902 will in which Sam Lancaster, whose father had bought the farm, left all 500 acres to Georgia's Aunt Celia. Lancaster's surviving brother sued and the case went to Kentucky's highest court, yet most newspapers declined to report about it. After winning the case Celia Mudd become a local philanthropist. Powers wrote up this family history as a novel.

This article is written by Nancy O'Malley, a UK archeologist who uncovered many details of Kinkeadtown(MLK Neighborhood) that were left out of the history books. She desribes the layout of the neigborhood, the scoial and economic dynamic between blacks and whites, and the women of the households within the neighborhood itself.

I found this very interesting based on the work and continued committment to educate both women and men in the state of Kentucky about voting.

This seems to be a news letter or article that has short bios on some of the most influential woman of Kentucky. It has several different categories including education pioneers reformers then the woman who were mover and shakers in that area.

Found UKs library database, this list is of famous African Americans men and women who made an impact on society by inventing different products. Two women on the list are: Bradberry, Henrietta Mahim & Moore, Mary A.

This resource is devoted to "Women Writers and Artist of color". This is similar to what our class is doing just with a wider national scope.

The various and different works that are provided from the website are both enlightening and interesting. The fact that a database now exists with such a wide variety of published material from women of all races and backgrounds in one place is cool to know about and explore.

This website offers information about Mrs. Phillips, a Kentucky graduate who formed a national and then international group or club for the equality of women through business and economic stand points. The group is called the International Federation of Business and Professional Women.

This is another example of a women that was able to achieve equality with the men in her town based on her economic status. She should also be known for acquiring and holding on to her businesses herself.

"hostility, invisibility and the feeling of being an outsider are still realities for many undergraduate and graduate women" - crazy since females now outnumber males, but proportional representation does not tell us about women's lives lived.

Unlike many other histories, this narrative puts a woman leader - Georgia Davis Powers - at the top of the list of those who organized the March on Frankfort

Kentucky report by Laura Clay does not include anything about the Covington Colored Organization mentioned by Eugenia Farmer in 1894 convention of KERA. Also no mention of Farmer speaking on school suffrage at the Colored Methodist Church of Covington

Powerful video about a woman who lived during the violence of segregation and how everyday activities we take for granted today took great courage then. For more information about this time period in Kentucky's history, see George C. Wright's ground-breaking book _Racial Violence in Kentucky, 1865-1940: Lynchings, Mob Rule, and "Legal Lynchings."

The video on jennie and Alice Wilson is a powerful example of how standing up for what you believe in is the best thing a person can do. Jennie is a strong woman because of her childhood. Seeing her parents as slaves and as free people made an impression on her. This impression made her srong enough to raise foour children in Kentucky during segregation and send all four of them to college. Alice was strong enough to integrate into mayfield high school with 9 other children at the age of fourteen when no other black students would. After integrating she dealt with vocal abuse from white classmates, but never retaliated physically or vocally in a negative manner. Alice simply continued on with the importantt things in her life, the completion of school and the hopes of continuing onward to college.

This website gives information on the history and on the mission of the church today. It is intresting to see the changes that tookplace and the involvement they had with the community during the civil rights era.
