Google Features That Make Teachers' Lives Easier Part 1 - Google 411, SMS, and Book Sea... - 1 views

Today's post is the first in several that will give you an insight to some Google tools you may not have not had the chance to previously explore. Yes, we all Google in one form or another, but most of us are unaware of little tools and great updated features that make Google more than a basic search engine. Plus, with the newest features of Google Squared, the Timeline, and the Wonder Wheel, students and teachers have a way to navigate through information more efficiently and effectively. I don't know about you, but I'm a big fan of getting results quickly rather than wandering in the web for hours.

The World A.T. Ways » In which 10 Twitter applications might change your glob... - 2 views

  •
In spite of all the talk about Twitter in connection with the Iranian elections and all things international as of late, I doubt that many of my university colleagues will be including Twitter on a syllabus this fall. I've talked before about the "Twitter Cycle" or the fact that, at first glance, Twitter appears trivial, and even, dare I say, stupid. The fact that one's thoughts need to be distilled to 140 characters or less constitutes a seemingly outwardly unacademic endeavor and therefore many open a Twitter account, declare it the dumbest thing ever and never return again. In this post I have two bold goals: to briefly lay out the case why Twitter is the platform for the globally minded and to provide 10 tools that I believe are central to those interested in all things global, including language learning.

Beyond Textbooks - Andy Chlup Discusses Digital Learning Models - Open Education - 0 views

  •
There was a large touch of irony in an August NY Times post discussing the demise of a fixture in the world of education, the school textbook. The article, In a Digital Future, Textbooks Are History, predicts the death of an industry that is becoming "antiquated" with each passing tech innovation.

The Top Ten Things Library Administrators Should Know About Technology By Roy Tennant - Posted on September 12th, 2009 Tagged: Administration It's not insulting to say that those who run libraries tend not to know all that much about technology. A very different set of skills are needed to run an organization, and those skills do not often come packaged along with technical knowledge and experience. But administrators need to know some specific things about technology in order to do their jobs well, so here is my list:

Enter some text in the form above (follow the 6 simple steps) and hit the 'Convert Text2image' button, this will create your text to be converted to a JPG image file which you can then download and use on your web site/blog. Great way to protect your email from spam bots (make emails "unspiderable" and unreadable by OCR robots) and search engines, post a picture of your email (only human eyes can read it) instead of actually typing your email online (to forums, chat rooms, instant messangers, blogs, etc).

SpeEdChange: When rethinking the school itself... - 2 views

Read this blog post! What happens if you really begin to rethink what your school looks like? No, I'm not talking about rethink from a wildly radical viewpoint - like mine or say, Neil Postman's - but just if a dedicated set of educators stops "tinkering" with little changes and wonders what school might be like... "Here is one of my private assumptions about education innovation that could use some public criticism: If [x] is going to change teaching practice at scale, then [x] needs to be easy, fun, and free for both the teacher and her students. [x] needs to be all three of those things at the same time. Realize that if you're a teacher and you're reading a blog post, you're automatically seeded in the top 10% of innovative educators. You'll try anything once. Let's also go with Jack Welch and assume that 10% of educators are hopelessly and/or willfully incompetent. Convince yourself, then, that 80% of teachers exist on a sliding scale of innovation and are basically up for grabs. Those who don't want to try [x] aren't necessarily bad educators. They may have made a rational calculation that [x] isn't easy enough, fun enough, or free enough to adopt. There are implications here, some obvious, some subtle: "

"Although search engines provide a great starting point when you're searching for someone online, with all of the new social sites that have popped up over the past few years, they're often just not enough. In our recent State of Blog Search 2009 post we discussed the various reasons you may choose to use any or all of the following blog search tools: Technorati, Google Blog Search, Ice Rocket, Ask.com Blogsearch, and FriendFeed. While these blog search engines are great to fill specific needs, they're also another great place to look for your footprints on the Web. "
