Welcome to the BalancEdTech wiki! We believe educators must be knowledgeable and comfortable with curriculum, pedagogy; and technology in order to "teach". Our blog posts, articles, presentations, workshops, and consulting focus on helping educators weave curriculum, pedagogy, and technology into engaging and rigorous learning. We also believe people learn best by doing AND reflecting, both of which are integral to our workshops. For more information, please click on the links to the left.

MaYoMo - Map Your Moments - Citizen Journalism online - Find, report and demand news wo... - 0 views

  •
MaYoMo ( Map Your Moments ) is a video-centric social news network for mobile citizen journalism. Our contributors and users include citizen journalists, bloggers, journalism students, experienced independent journalists and NGO's from all over the world. In other words, if you are aware of your surrounding life and you need to express your point of view on certain topics or events, you are more than welcome in our network. MaYoMo enables its users to ask for news and information from any corner of the world. Whenever you have a question about some event that you've just heard of or read about e.g., you can easily place a request in a country from MaYoMo's world map and ask what happened, when or where. Users from that region can possibly help you out by providing you any information available. This is how we let you get involved in the global events not only by witnessing, reporting or commenting them, but also by digging them out right from the place they have happened. As we know many people nowadays spend most of their time in virtual worlds, rather than in the real life, we've built them a special continent on our map. "Virtu" is the virtual continent where users can ask for news or send reports about events in worlds like Second Life, World of Warcraft and dozens more. Greetings, The MaYoMo Team

Who's the better translator: Machines or humans? - CNN.com - 0 views

  •
(CNN) -- One of the Internet's great promises is that it's the ultimate democratizer. It's open to everyone and allows all people to communicate. Facebook and Google have added new translation tools, but they take different approaches. Facebook and Google have added new translation tools, but they take different approaches. But, so far, there have been several hitches in that plan. Not everyone has access to a computer and a broadband connection. Some governments still censor the Internet. And of course, we don't all speak the same language.

Collect - Relate - Create - Donate: Learning Goals & Web Tools Used wisely, technology empowers students to take responsibility for their own learning. In Leonardo's Laptop, Ben Shneiderman provides teachers with a powerful framework, Collect-Relate- Create-Donate (CRCD), for designing student-centered learning opportunities using computers. Shneiderman developed his model by applying new insights from creativity researchers like Mihaly Csikszentimihaly and Howard Gardner to establish creative problem solving methods. In particular, Shneiderman's CRCD framework emphasizes the importance of the social aspects of learning in generating creative work. In CRCD projects, students research information, work collaboratively to create a meaningful product that demonstrates their learning, and contribute that project to a larger learning community. Shneiderman designed the Collect-Relate-Create-Donate framework as a vehicle for preparing young people for a 21st century world where innovation, creativity, and collaboration will be more highly prized than retention and repetition.

I've spent the last day and a half testing it out, and so I've had the opportunity to use nearly every feature of the service.  If you were to ask me how to best describe it, I'd say it is like Twitter, Facebook, Skype, and Gmail merged together and formed one, super social, Omni-beast of a website.  The interface is elegant and beautiful, the features are easy to use, and you can "Circle" up with as many people as you want.  However, it isn't without its flaws.

What is an eLearning Authoring Tool? - 0 views

  •
Let's start with a simple definition: eLearning Authoring tools are used to create eLearning lessons. These tools have been around much longer than most people know. When asked, many guess that they started coming on the market recently or perhaps back in the 1990s. The truth is the National Science Foundation funded the first authoring tool, called PLATO, way back in 1960, and then another in 1967, called TICCIT. Both spawned many other authoring tools over the years.
