In this article, we are going to look at how the Activiti BPM engine can be used together with Vaadin. We are going to do this in the form of a case study of a demo application that is available on GitHub. The code is licensed under Apache License 2.0 and can freely be used as a foundation for your own applications. As we have just released the first milestone of the Spring Data JPA project I'd like to give you a quick introduction into its features. As you probably know, the Spring framework provides support to build a JPA based data access layer. So what does Spring Data JPA add to this base support? To answer that question I'd like to start with the data access components for a sample domain implemented using plain JPA + Spring and point out areas that leave room for improvement. After we've done that I will refactor the implementations to use the Spring Data JPA features to address these problem areas. Jettison is a collection of Java APIs (like STaX and DOM) which read and write JSON. This allows nearly transparent enablement of JSON based web services in services frameworks like CXF or XML serialization frameworks like XStream. There are currently two included conventions for mapping JSON to XML. The first, is BadgerFish which implements the full XML infoset in JSON using various techniques. The second, is called the "mapped" convention. It allows you to manually map XML namespaces to JSON element prefixes. Jettison was developed for usage in XFire and CXF to enable JSON based services. The packaging type eclipse-repository was originally introduced for building products that can be updated with p2 (cf. TYCHO-188). This requires the following build results: a p2 repository which contains the product IU, and a zip file with the installed product. (Although this is technically no longer needed since the Update Manager was replaced by p2, zip files are still the primary way to distribute Eclipse/RCP installations.) For ease of implementation, this was done in the same packaging type eclipse-repository. In the meantime, eclipse-repository has gained in capabilities (in particular through TYCHO-491), making it difficult for users to choose the right packaging types. The Virgo Web Server from EclipseRT is a completely module-based Java application server that is designed to run enterprise Java applications and Spring-powered applications with a high degree of flexibility and reliability. The Virgo kernel supports the core concepts of Virgo and is not biased towards the web server, thus enabling other types of server to be created. Eclipse Gemini Blueprint is the reference implementation for the OSGi Alliance Blueprint Service (chapter 121 of the OSGi 4.2 Compendium Specification). Gemini Blueprint project makes it easy to build Java applications that run in an OSGi framework. By using Gemini Blueprint, applications benefit from using a better separation of modules, the ability to dynamically add, remove, and update modules in a running system, the ability to deploy multiple versions of a module simultaneously (and have clients automatically bind to the appropriate one), and a dynamic service model. Gemini users may also be interested in Eclipse Virgo, an open source, completely modular, OSGi-based Java application server. Its documentation is considered a supplement to Gemini Blueprint as it explains in detail, how OSGi can be used in various development and production scenarios.
