Ind. school can't punish volleyball players over slumber party pics - SPLC News Flashes - 1 views

  •
INDIANA - A high school violated the First Amendment when it punished members of its volleyball team for posting pictures of penis-shaped lollipops on the Internet, a federal judge ruled Wednesday. The decision came two years after two 10th-grade girls at Churubusco High School in Northeast Indiana were suspended from the volleyball team and other extracurricular activities. The students were punished after they posted photos of themselves with "phallic-shaped rainbow colored lollipops." The photos were taken at a slumber party and, according to court documents, showed the girls simulating sex acts. The judge's decision found that both the behavior shown in the photos and the images themselves are protected by the First Amendment. The judge also struck down part of the school's conduct code that allows students to be punished for acting "in a manner in school or out of school that brings discredit or dishonor upon yourself or your school."

People Powered Front Pages Rule | The Whip - 0 views

  •
"What if front pages were selected by newspapers' readers instead of their editors?  At NewsWhip, we're always interested in the news stories people are choosing to share - and how those stories differ from the normal news stories editors put on the front pages of big newspapers. So we ran a little experiment. On Wednesday morning, we gathered the front pages of leading newspapers in several countries. Then we used Spike to check the most shared stories from each one. A little work at our end, and we used those most shared stories to make new "people powered" front pages for each newspaper - giving the most shared story the most prominence, the second most shared the second most prominence, etc. We replaced headlines and pictures, though did not get into replacing story text and bylines. The results are pretty neat - maybe even thought provoking."

How to take good pictures with different cameras - CNN.com - 0 views

  •
In photojournalism, good hardware can go a long way in helping you capture high-quality images, but someone who can properly use a cellphone camera is just as likely to take great photos as a novice equipped with a top-of-the-line DSLR. Knowing whether you're trying to capture spot news or shooting a photo essay is only half the battle: You also need to know how to use different cameras and which tool is appropriate for which situation.

I found this story newsworthy because it involves a man from my area. The qualities of newsworthiness that this story contains are timeliness, proximity, and unusual nature. The story was published just yesterday, and the magazine where the photo in question was displayed was a recent issue. The story is also very near to me. The man who took these photographs lives in my town. The story is of unusual nature because it isn't very often that men or women from Flemington, a small town in Jersey, are published or recognized in national media.
