No More Bleeding Ledes, Please | Save the News - 0 views

Ever wonder why this is all we see and read and hear? It isn't simply that scandal and violence are all that's happening in our communities; in fact, it's the only news that companies want to cover. And they make it expressly clear to their reporters. The AP's editorial submission guidelines are doomed to produce mind-numbing, paranoia-inducing stories that are neither informed nor newsworthy. For example, here are AP Minnesota's guidelines for journalists looking to pitch stories:

    • Matt Straley

The story is newsworthy because it is about an important race for the majority vote of an important demographic. Prominence- Both men are representatives Timeliness- it occured yestreday Proximity- Its in new york city
    • Matt Straley

I think this is newsworthy because it involves the upcoming presidential candidacy. The qualities of newsworthiness are proximity because it occurred in new york city also it contains Mr. Weiner who was convicted of sexual assault.
  •
(CNN) -- In a huge upset that few would have predicted just months ago, a Republican won a special election in a heavily Democratic district in New York for the seat of former Rep. Anthony Weiner

New Facebook Feature: A Subscription to Friends' Feeds - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  • To help manage this problem, Facebook on Wednesday introduced a “subscription button,” which allows people to subscribe to parts of your news feed without having to become your Facebook friend. The new feature feels very similar to the follow button on Twitter, where you choose to follow someone’s feed.

I find this article newsworthy because so many people use Facebook to communicate, and updates and improvements to the site make this possible. The newsworthy qualities that this story contains are proximity, timeliness, and importance/impact. Proximity is because Facebook is an international institution that is available to all, therefore the story takes place just within people's computer screens. The story is timely because the news was received from Facebook officials just yesterday, and published today, and the story has great impact because of the incredible numbers of Facebook users.

TSA rolling out new screening procedures for children - CNN.com - 0 views

    • Lauren Dugan

summarizes the article... the information following goes into the specifics. In airport security, children under the age of 12 will go through less procedures.
  • Responding to the uproar over physical searches of children, the Transportation Security Administration is rolling out new procedures that should reduce, although not eliminate, the number of times children are patted down at airport checkpoints.
    • Lauren Dugan

This is newsworthy because this new procedure affects everyone with children all around the world. This information is very important to know and shows progression in absurd securities at airports.

This article contains importance/ impact, helpful/ special interest, proximity (though nation wide, it affects people close to you and far away), and timelessness.
  •
summary of article in one sentence... information following the first sentence goes into the specifics. This article contains importance/ impact (important for travelers, parents, the general population so they know the specific details and airport security is making progress) , helpful/ special interest (it is interesting that right after the tenth anniversary of 9/11 airport security seems to be cutting back. It is also helpful for traveling parents to know what will happen with their children in security), proximity (though nation wide, it affects people close to you and far away), and timelessness (announced yesterday). This is newsworthy because this new procedure affects everyone with children all around the world. This information is very important to know and shows progression in absurd securities at airports.

Flemington photographer's image selected for front cover of Professional Photographer M... - 2 views

  • Master Photographer Jim LaSala of Flemington and co-owner of ArtisticEfex in Hillsborough image was selected for the front cover of September 2011 Professional Photographer Magazine. LaSala captured “Hope and Despair,” A PPA 2011 Loan Collection image, in Port Au Prince on a trip to Haiti with a non‐profit organization who’s mission is to document people who are in such need for help.

I found this story newsworthy because it involves a man from my area. The qualities of newsworthiness that this story contains are timeliness, proximity, and unusual nature. The story was published just yesterday, and the magazine where the photo in question was displayed was a recent issue. The story is also very near to me. The man who took these photographs lives in my town. The story is of unusual nature because it isn't very often that men or women from Flemington, a small town in Jersey, are published or recognized in national media.

Evicted for Manhattan Starbucks No. 188, Shop Fights Back - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  • The city sheds its skin every day; Mom & Pop are always getting the boot. Manhattan now has 186 Starbucks, which is eight per square mile. There are more Starbuckses than subway stations. You might think that 186 stores on one small island is the functional equivalent of everywhere, but it turns out not to be, in Starbuckian terms, enough: outlet No. 187 is opening Friday in Times Square, and sometime early next year, No. 188 — or so — will be hanging its shingle on Third Street, right down the block from the world headquarters of the Hell’s Angels. But sing no sad songs for the Bean. By the time Starbucks has rebuilt the corner of Third Street and First Avenue to meet its quality standards for hospitable monotony, the Bean will be flying its flag about 100 yards south.

I find this story newsworthy because I am a Starbucks-lover and visit the city often. However, I like the idea of a small mom-and-pop coffee shop fighting back against such a huge chain. The story contains two qualities of newsworthiness: timeliness and conflict. The move has not happened yet, but the Bean is set to evict soon, and the news of this necessity is very recent. The story also involves conflict between Starbucks and it's ever-changing crown and ever-growing chain, and this small coffee shop with its loyal customers and homey feel.
