But there's another image that has a less soothing, homespun connotation, and that, too, was not entirely washed away by the floods. I happened to visit the Jersey Shore before Irene did, drawn to a different kind of cataclysm. This wasn't an act of God, but a stroke of network programming: the MTV series "Jersey Shore."

I thought this was interesting because I couldn't believe with all the security at stadiums that a man managed to sneak in a stun gun and use it especially so close to September 11th. Proximity: Jets Stadium Human Interest/Emotion: People may be angered by this happening Timeliness: A couple days ago Conflict: Leroy uses stun gun on three men Unusual Nature: People usually don't have the chance to sneak a weapon in a stadium especially so close to September 11th with all the security.

Imagining a Christie Campaign for President - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  • A first-term governor whose paucity of government experience may be just what the doctor ordered, Mr. Christie is a jumble of political contradictions. He’s a conservative with some liberal views, a bullying New Jersey politician who frequently talks about compromise, and an obviously reluctant candidate who clearly hears the siren song of the national stage.

In the latest edition of Time Magazine, author and Yale law professor Adam Cohen presents an overly simplistic portrayal of New Jersey's new "cyberbullying" law as a "model" for the nation. Cohen's method of analysis, which typifies the reasoning of many state legislators, can be reduced to this: "Bullying is a big problem. This is a tough legal response. Therefore, it is good." Well, maybe. But when even the lobbyists for school administrators are publicly fretting that the schools are being given too much authority (or as they see it, too much responsibility), then you have to wonder whether the train has jumped the rails.

"A northern New Jersey school district's code of conduct that extended to off-campus behavior was struck down today by an appeals court that said the policy exceeded the authority given to local districts by the state. The case stemmed from a policy instituted in 2009 by the Ramapo Indian Hills School District in Bergen County. It sought to ban students from extracurricular activities if they were charged with illegal activities, regardless of whether the alleged behavior occurred on school grounds."
