Windows 7 alluring, but XP is the migration X factor - Network World - 0 views

  • Microsoft for its part told XP users last month (MAY) that if they are just starting to test Vista that they should switch to Windows 7.
    • John Lundin

How does this make W7 a better choice than Vista?
  • generally happy.
    • John Lundin

maybe happy, but much poorer because of the need to update all their XP apps and retire all the older PCs that do not have the horsepower....
  • With both Windows 7 (the host operating system) and XP (guest) running on a single machine, users will be forced to maintain and patch two operating systems per desktop.
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • XP Mode is likely a one- to two-year Band-Aid.

Microsoft's software pipeline set to burst - Network World - 0 views

  • results could either be a perfect storm for Microsoft with major product releases carefully planned to coincide with an important milestone in the IT buyer's upgrade cycle, or a roar that falls on nearly deaf ears and severely deflated corporate wallets
    • John Lundin

...or some architecturally designed combination of new and old. At some point increasing numbers of less sophisticated organizations will opt for a non-MSFT solution that better utilizes the organizational resources.

Microsoft's software pipeline set to burst - Network World - 0 views

  • [Microsoft] is being brutally honest
    • John Lundin

...well, *more* honest maybe... but not 'brutally' honest.
  • going to have to carefully plan out the upgrade because we don't have any budget to get another machine

Speed Test: Windows 7 May Not Be Much Faster Than Vista - PC World - 0 views

  • One of the major complaints about Windows Vista was the fact that it was consistently slower than Windows XP. If Windows 7 doesn’t significantly improve that situation, it may fail to convince people to move away from Windows XP
    • John Lundin

I remain unconvinced... You keep an OS that performs and is reliable and runs your apps...

7 Reasons to Avoid Windows 7 | Gadget Lab | Wired.com - 0 views

  • Most of those currently using Windows XP should also upgrade, to take advantage of Windows 7’s usability, enhanced device support, and other features.
    • John Lundin

which already run fine under XP... you have previously made the case that businesses are not excited about the cost and resources to reinvent the OS that runs fine as XP! ...now you summarize the other direction... "flip-flop"
  • if you’re currently using a Linux distribution or a version of Mac OS X, Windows 7 isn’t going to offer much to get you to switch.
    • John Lundin

Duh... but what about the XP to Linux... the step to W7 may not be quite as steep as the step to Linux, but if your business is wanting to move from the MSFT platform, this is probably the best time to do it!
    • John Lundin

Duh... but what about those running XP going to Linux or OS X... the step to W7 is not quite as steep as the step to Linux, but it is close... and if there is a time to move away from MSFT this is most probably the best opportunity that you will get...

Gartner Identifies New Approach for Enterprise Architecture - 1 views

  •
"The first key characteristic of the emergent approach is best summarised as 'architect the lines, not the boxes', which means managing the connections between different parts of the business rather than the actual parts of the business themselves," said Bruce Robertson, research vice president at Gartner. "The second key characteristic is that it models all relationships as interactions via some set of interfaces, which can be completely informal and manual - for example, sending handwritten invitations to a party via postal letters - to highly formal and automated, such as credit-card transactions across the Visa network."

Microservices: Decomposing Applications for Deployability and Scalability - 0 views

  • First, developers must deal with the additional complexity of creating a distributed system.
  • Implementing use cases that span multiple services without using distributed transactions is difficult.
  • The microservice architecture also introduces significant operational complexity. There are many more moving parts – multiple instances of different types of service – that must be managed in production.
