"There are page turner Magazines on the iPad that are basically PDF versions of the print version. Becoming more popular are the magazines that have hot spot areas, video, scrollable articles and inter magazine linking. While these interactive magazines are being produced by large magazine publishers once a month, Engadget is creating their full featured content "Dristo" weekly. Grab the app and you will get an overview page of all of the 'magazines' published. Tap the ones you want to download and read within the same app."

"Kikin has made a iPad browser that turns traditional search on its head. An iPhone version is due out later this month. But it doesn't want to be a search engine. And it doesn't want to be a browser. The company's goal is to propagate the search technology it's been developing since 2008. Beta product with a lot of potential of making secondary level mathematics more accessible with mobile technology. Great idea, but would need more features. As is, the page needs to be refreshed to clear and begin again.

The Inaugural Dust or Magic Children's App Design Institute is a three-day review of the best (magic) and worst (dust) children's media for handheld devices. We'll critique the state of the art, brainstorm possibilities and test a lot of hardware and apps. Speakers: The list is growing as the event develops (this is a first). The idea is to bring together a small ( (105 miles from San Francisco on the tip of the Monterey Peninsula. Cost: $1380 for one seat, $990 for 2-5, plus housing ($130/night). Group size is limited to 60. There will be a free, public AppFest on Sunday and a larger TED-like event in the Chapel. Geography seems to me to be one of those subjects that actually lends itself to the type of multimedia multi-sensory experience that is the ipad. Some of the apps in this post allow you produce beautiful infographic style maps using your data, others allow you to explore the ways in which the world is being effected by population. The map of disasters is a hard one to ignore especially in the context of the recent spate of tsunamis and earthquakes. Have a look at this small selection of apps that are available to see if any would benefits your students.
